RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Yeah my big concern was staying out of the woods but at this point MT, Im probabky better off looking for a scrape line liek you said.
More info regarding my concerns. I emailed a whitetail research biologistabout the lack of water and what concerns/effects it could have on the property. His reply was short and sweet. He said deer need to drink once a day, however, they can survive several days or longer without any water. They will eventually move to a location that easily provides them with ample water that is easily acccessible without having to travel far.

Well based on that and not having ANY water within a mile or further in any direction, I think my questions are answered. Im sure there are still some deer around as proof by my camera, but I also think many have left. Wait until you see some pics, these deer look horrible, like anorexic deer, poor things. Dehydration obviously. I'll post one when I get home. Look at the pic of the normal Doe I took around Sept 15th, nice and healthy, when you see these things you may not even eat them, all bones and ribs.

You're right, she really doesn't look too healthy. Hopefully she stays healthy enough to take care of that young one next to her. Having spots after the 1st of Oct.? Looks like a late birth. She probably got bred in the 2nd or sometimes even the 3rd estrous period.

Hope you guys get some rain soon. We were in a similar drought here in Oklahoma for the past 3 or 4 years until this year. This year was one of he wettest and mildest years on record, it really gave us a lot of relief. Maybe you all will get what we did soon. This weather the last several years has been crazy.

AS for the Avatar...I'll be back on the Team bus Next week. Just a little support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mom who under went a little procedure this week..All is well..Thanks for your concern.

Last night I saw 2 bucks a little tiny, fork-horn, barely ear high! and another buck that I deemed "Chocolate horns" he is a the closest thing to a shooter i've seen. I never got to see both sides or a front view..I was watching him through trees at a distance...there was no score estimation..it was just one of them bucks that what ya seen was enough to know.. But damn was I back in there..in fact i will have to shoot the bow tonight..to check it, we took a hard spill on a creek crossing..trying to sneak out the opposite way quietly .

Can't hunt today I'm on kid duty while the wife works a craft show..but tommorrow i'll be out and I think I talked dad into joining me in the afternoon. Looking forward to that!

Oh yeah in this funny season..I'm at 7 different bucks ZERO doe. Weird huh?

Glad to hear the your Moms surgery went well. That stuff worries me all the time.

Went back to my dried up property this morning to remove stands, cameras etc. Walked the creek bottom and found 6 dead deer. 3 Does, 2 fawns and a spike. All laying in what was left of the last bit of moisture, now a mud hole thats about a foot deep from them digging down for water, was sad to see that they are suffering like that.

Well my latest adventure is posted on main board.

http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2380930

Long story short...saw another good buck although not a good scoring buck..3.5-4.5 year old mature awesome one side, butwith a 14-16 inch spike on the other. Unique and mature enough I'd have lanced him..given the chance.

He was scraping, rubbing, and working licking branches. Hung up at 68 yards!

Sounds very bad Diesel..sure it isn't EHD? Sounds about right, dying near water..or where water should have been. I know around Pittsburgh and South, word of mouth reports, are very bad!

Man I love bucks with odd racks like that. They make great mounts. Sounds a great hunt.
The golden time is approaching fast. Found al new scrape line with some bigrubs at ny back up spot, which I guess is going to be my primary spot now. Im going to start hunting one of the first 2 scrapes coming from the bedding area, or closest to the bedding area. If hes going tocheck them, he'll hit them first.

Well Im sure it could be EHD. Ive called the DNR 3 times with no response. Either way the poor things are dropping like flies and suffering.Im sure the deer we have managed over the last 10 years will probably suffer for years to come because of this. You know its funny how Mother Nature works, she always has a way of balancing things out eventually.

Ok Prediction time..Men, one of us,will lay one down for the team in the next week. That is before 10/23 ends we have a scoring buck enteredin the contest.

Based on that you have a 1 in 10 chance of scoring in the next 7 days..pretty good odds in the deer woods..Now get out there! :D ;) :D

They just put some preformed P.O.S. on it for now ,I can take it off a couple of times a day.
I'm waiting for some test that they put dye into the joint to see where it leaks out. I'm sitting here with 3 fractures of small bones and one tendon that needs reattached.
I still am in the woods every night scouting and checking my camera..Its been hotter than I like to hunt any way.
And right now I'm afraid of my wrist collapsing and my riser coming back hitting me in the face. [:o]My good looks aren't a problem but I'd hate to knock my teeth out.;)

I think we have a great chance I have another month of season and those last two weeks are just great. If you take the chocolate horned buck this week we will be staged to make a run for the lead.:)
Good luck guys.

Well my MD trip got scraped due to my sons nanny moving and would of had to scrap the KY trip also if it wasn't for my wife taking off work to watch the grandkids so we could go. Shes such a good woman!
Gonna try to pull a rabbit out of my hat next week and head up to Black River and camp/hunt for a few days, we have taken a few good bucks out of there in the past. Heading for KY on the 2nd.
I think your right GR8, getting into prime time, someone should post a buck soon.
Thats a shame about the dead deer Diesel, it does sound like EWD, mother nature does have her own form of QDM.

I traded a Shorthair pup for a Cow Elk the other day at one of the game farms and went to pick it up Saturday. When we got there they were getting ready to shoot a Bull (2500.00) They threw out some corn and the guy shot it standing right there next to the fence whith a mouth full of corn looking at him 20 yards away. Now how in the He!! can they call that hunting?

What? No cow elk is wortha GSP puppy!! You are getting a live cow elk? For a pet? Just the meat already butchered? Im guessing its legal to buy and sell deer/elk? Do tell. Sounds cool whatever you dod SF

Sounds like EHD Diesel but who knows just found out that not a few miles from where i usually hunt there was a couple deer with it could explain why im not seeing the deer i usually see this time of year or maybe we hit them to hard last year i dont know. time to start checkin out other possibilites state land or a couple of the other properties i can hunt on. did see a couple decent bucks on Green Ridge last weekend maybe try there?
But i agree somebody going to put us on the board here soon!!!

Well, had a decent sit this morning. I had my first buck of the season within bow range (12 yards). It was a good looking 1.5 yr old 6, he had good brows and G2's for his age and he was trying to grow some G3's to be an 8, but just didn't quite make it this year. If he makes it, in 2 or 3 years he will be one heck of a deer. It was encouraging, he was going through the area with his head down andtale half way up in the air. You could tell he definately had something other than eating on his mind.On my way out, Ipassed by a stand site that I normally wait to hunt late Oct through November, and there was a lot of sign. I usually wait because it is closer to their bedding area and don't want to bump them early in the season. I think I will try an all day sit in that area early next week. Seems like more deer are getting on their feet and starting to work the scrapes and rubs. It's just a matter of time.

I can't get out today may..but Thursday, Friday and Sunday I'll be out! I'm like you Tembry I can't wait till Sunday when I can get back in there where I saw 2 good shooters. It's just to far in for an after work hunt!

Thurs and Fri..i'll skirt the edges and hopefully find a nice young doe! Sure the bigger boys can range that far..so anythings possible. It's definetly heating up..I'm finding more scrapes and rubs everytime out!

What a night. Myself and a buddy (Mark)both saw the big 12 again. He was 40 yards from my buddy, no shot, because, he was chasing does like a fool believe it or not. I heard a bunch of noise, leaves and branches breaking, just crashing through the woods, thats sound that gets us pumped up this time of year.I saw a few Does run out into the field. They all were looking back. Then the big boy stepped out and began running the Does around in circles, in the woods out of the woods etc. He never got closer than 60 yards but man was he a sight. The last time I saw the buck, he was running a Doe right in my buddys directon, I was waiting for the call, but never got it. Im not sure it was the same one I saw a few days ago, but this guy was an easy 150-160. Afterwards Mark was so excited he was like a little school girl. Things are getting fired up aound here. All we need is a little luck.

awesome D! we saw about 10 turks heard deer FOR SURE moving along the ridge in fron tof us, just no way too see them through the thick trees....we need the leaves to drop already. no doubt in my mind it was deer working the ridge for acorns.

good luck with that 12, sounds like a hoss. wouldnt think they would be chasin does this early, but then again anything goes in the deer woods.

ill be out saturday morning, but with a smokepole to get some huntin time in with dad.i may try to bowhunt afterschool tomorow if i dont have too much going on

headin out tomorow again dies?

Yeah Im going out every day after work TE, and Sat morning until the end of November. Ive never seen a buck chase Does this early either. Im sure he was just all fired up or something. Another friend was hunting another property not far from me tonight, he had around 20 Does feed by him and saw several bucks, one was a big 8, he said none of the bucks payed any attention to the Does. Sure wish I could get out more morning but my work schedule ruins that idea. Im taking 2 weeks off in November, probably the first and second week. I may have a buck by then but Im going to be videoing some hunts for a business thing.

That will be ok when I have the time to get back in my hot spot..but after work I don't have that kinda time.

I'm gonna try a local farm tonight..not high, Buck, hopes..But maybe get lucky on a slick-head.

Good luck tonight GR8. The good thing about not seeing deer one day, is the next time you do see some its makes it that much moreexciting.

i used the muzzleloader this weekend, but if anything it got me STOKED about bowhunting.

More of scouting out a block of woods than hunting. Saw deer every outting, as well as turkey and coyote and about 25 wood ducks. i hunted this block two years ago and was covered in deer. last year nothing so i decided not to hunti tthis year until this weekend. now i will be hunting this during the week after school and elsewhere on weekends.

mostly does and a small fork horn, but between me and dad we saw two "shooter" bucks....a nice racked deer that came in at dark to dads stand, didnt say what it was but could tell it was a big buck. Then on the drive out that morning we saw three deer on the neighbors farm. stopped the truck (no cars coming) to glass them, and they took off over the hill back to the block of woods i hunt:D. while runnin away i saw that one was a nice wide 8 or 10 that would push 120 probably. bow in hand, any 8 point basket or bigger is hittin the ground. im gettin antsy after waitin 3 years for the right buck.

found several GREAT straight trees to use the climber on, and we have a two man 12 foot ladder stand already hung from like three years ago. So i WILL head out this week with climber and bow and hopefully score one for the team.

i have too many yards to mow tomorow, so it looks like tuesday for me, unless i get a perfect wind when i walk outta school tomorow. then mowing will be officially postponed, who needs money anyways?[8D]

Not much to report here mid 80's and windy. I got out early Sunday afternoon to get set. Well, at the other end of the field that I've been seeing good bucks in, is a ground blind. So someone else is on to them.

I saw 4 deer (2seperate pairs)2 were doe and 2 were unidentified as the ghosted through thick timber.

Time to change tactics again!

Whats up guys! Not much to report on yet. I've seen lots of smaller bucks and mothers with fawns but no shooter yet. I took advantage of this warm weather to do a little flyfishing for salmon/steelhead. Alsowinterized the damn boat. Didn't hurt so bad with the temps so high. A cold front is on its way and I plan on hittn the woods hardfrom here on out. My three weeksof vacation started andits time to get serious! Good luck team it sounds like horn will be hitting the ground in no time.;)
