RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
ORIGINAL: davepjr71 Sorry for the long post but I think it' a good story. I got to practice real Maryland shooting conditions. 96 degrees with about 90% humidity. The Mossy Oak Archer's gloves are pretty sweet in this weather. I also bought the Alpine cable slide today. Watching me and my buddy put it on my bow without a bow press was probably like watching 2 monkeys trying to hump a football. First, he help the bow parallel to the ground and I tried to pull both cables back. Then we realized if he held the bow perpendicular to the ground I could draw the cables back and put the slide on. What a pain in the butt. However, the new slide seems pretty sweet. "How did you get a sticker and a patch! I didn't get one, I'll be right back.....[:@]" lol |

Mark,
Thank you for sharing your relationship with your father and grandfather. I hope you have many more years with your father and the few left hunting with your grandfather are special. Jarrod, Thanks man on both. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Thanks for the nice words Dave! Seems like we have a great bunch of guy's here. Some of the most decent people I know are hunters,it always hacks me off when people make negative generalizations or stereotypes about hunters.
I just got back from setting two game camera's,they are about a mile apart, one is in the middle of a bedding area.Lots of tracks, none of them look to be that big.The other spot is on a ridge,a runway coming down the edge of it.It is getting used, and it is close to a real thick saddle, there is also some old bear sign there. I think I will be moving camera's every weekend now until the opener.I really want to see if I can locate a couple of real good bucks.Time will tell. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
I agree totally with you about hunters. Anti's paint us as a bunch of blood thirsty mongrels who hate our mothers when in reality most hunters are probably the most caring people out there.
I hope you catch some nice deer on your cameras. I bought my brother one of the ladder stands from Dick's to replace a stand he had built about 7 yrs ago that is falling out of a tree. Between the portable and the ladder stand and our climbers we should be able to move around different properties. I'm trying to decide about getting a deer hauler. The one area I hunt is thick and my climber may not work. however, with the portable and sticks I can get up in there but I'm not allowed to leave a stand in position so I'll be hauling it in each time I hunt. To post one of the pictures as your avatar you need to right click on the picture and save it to your PC. Then, in your profile tou have to download the picture and apply. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Thanks for the avatar help Dave! It seems like kind of a drag to be bringing sticks and your stand in every time you want to hunt that spot. Are you allowed to put tree steps in tree's there? I am guessing probably not.If you could put steps in a tree than you could leave all or most of them in and then just bring a light fixed position stand in on your back.
I am going to think about this situation a bit and see what comes to me.Are you allowed to leave anything in the tree? |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Do you hunt public land or a club or something?
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
ORIGINAL: davepjr71 Jarrod, Can you post the picture you have minus the badger? That one kicks some tail. Scot, That's cool about your nephew. It's great to see young people excited about hunting and especially archery. Sounds like you are doing everything right too. I also appreciate what you said on my thread and your story about what happened with you is touching. I can relate to what you went through with always being too busy. It's like our senses wake-up when we go back into the woods. What happened with your father is cool. That's great that you went with him and also got a buck. I'm proud of you being on my team. Mike, Thank you for the comments. You're a good guy. I've very proud of my team right now. What a bunch of great guys. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
You're welcome about the avatar.
It's old military property that is now public hunting. The property was onceordinance testing facility and part of Fort Meade. I checked the P&Yrules concerning a place like this before deciding to qualify to ensure that I could post a deer from the property and found through a search that military bases are acceptable due to their size. Over 12,000 acres of property to hunt and it's my first year there. You are not allowed to screw anything in the trees or leave anything there. Next week I'll be allowed to venture into the woods and get a better understanding of the trees where I plan on hunting. right now it's been all aerial photos and topo work and have a few places picked out that I hope are off the beaten path. Mike, Not a problem. Have a safe trip and we'll here from you when you get back. I'm going to be gone for the same time period down to my brother's place for the holiday weekend. We have about 30 things we'd like to do for either deer or duck hunting and he works half the time. Maybe slip in an afternoon dove hunt too. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Sounds like fun Dave, have a great time. 12,000 acres to hunt sound awesome. I hope you get some doves.
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
I think I'll dove hunt a little too. For us it opens sept 1. So does goose.
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Go for it. I heard they are really good on the grill wrapped in bacon with a jalepeno in between stuck on with a toothpick.
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Looks like team 5 is on the board. Do we have any Sep hunter's on our team?
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
September 15 here for deer. Dove comes in this Saturday and so does goose. We are thinking about going for goose maybe too. Teal also comes in the same day as archery.
Over the past 3 weeks it seemed like my arrows kept getting lower and lower every time I shot and that I kept having to move my peep up and my sights. So, Sunday I decided to replace my center sering because it was coming apart a little. Well, I measured my nocks for my D-loop and my bottom nock was 13" from my lower speed nocks. This seemed really odd to me so I found my info from the last time and my bottom nock was at 12.125" from the lower speed nocks. My D-loop has sid up almost an inch in less than a month!!!! So, I replaced my center serving and put my square on the string and placed my lower nock 12" from the speed nock which put my arrow 1/8" above center and had to wait until today to shoot to check everything out. So, I shot my 50 yd pin at 4 yds and had to adjust my sight back to where it used to be and still ahd a left issue. Here, my QAD had moved to the left about 1/16". However, the barrel didnt' move at all. The steel rod that the flipper screws too has somehow slid out about 1/16". So, I corrected this issue and here is my results at 35 yds. Check out my nock!!! I'm also going to post some pics from MDBUCKHUNTER and I'd 3D shoot too. Instead of taking wide open shots and also trying to get 12 ring shots we tried for good kill shots. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
That was a good time Dave. Thanks again.
Next time are we going to buy some recurves and 4 dozen arrows to shoot 4 arrows each per target? [:@] |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Guys,
I'm going to create a thread on the bowhunting called baltimore bowmen shoot and post the other pictures. Josh, It's always a good time shooting with you buddy. We are getting more on every time. |

RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
The speed nocks didn't move. My entire center serving slid up about an inch. It was my first effort at doing center serving and I didn't pull the ends as tight as I should have and the serving worked loose far enough to allow the slide. all is good now though.
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Oh so you did your own center serving and had to redo it. And these speed nocks are..?
Aren't they just weights near the cams that supposedly speed it up? How? And, do you like your treelimb? I need a good quiver. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
That was my first time and I didn't tie my bottom knote correctly. This past time I took a pair of pliers and really pulled the knote tight.
Oh, I'm sorry. Dummy me.I thought you were commenting on my speed nocks moving. The speed nocks are just brass nocks placed near the cams to increase velocity. Usually 2 of them and adjusting them. You adjust them up and down to get maximum velocity. They are on my factory string. By moving weight closer to the cams it helps them turn over faster. |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Do they actually work? I wonder if they would work with hybrid cams. Come to think of it, my stock string had a weight at the end of the bottom serving. hmmm. Are these just the standare brass nocks? The one that came on mine looks like three of them covered in shrink tubing.
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
Those are your speed nocks. Some companies use 2, some use 3. It all depends on what works best for that set-up.
|
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
They're only on the bottom. Will I need those when my new string comes or will I be ok without them?
And, do you like your treelimb? |
RE: 19-Official Team 19 Thread
I'm sure there is some reason why they only stuck them on the bottom. However, I couldn't begin t oexplain why.
You can play around with the speed nocks if you'd like to on your new string. It's all a matter of if you want to try and pick-up a few fps. The Treelimb is a pretty nice quiver. It's very quiet even when the vanes are touching and the henging feature was one of the biggest selling points to me. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Hey Dave .... is everyone on your team trying that new stealth broadhead since you named your team Quiet Arrow.
Take a look in the bowhunting forum to see what I'm talking about , the post is titled ( has anyone used this broadhead ) let me know how it works. :D |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
NOPE sticking with my trusty ole Thunderhead 100's have yet to fail me...
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
We're all about being stealthy.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
I'm planning on using Thunderhead's 100 too. I haven't shot a deer with them yet but hopefully that will change in Oct.I went last night and bought my tags for the season. I'm ready to go!
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Brad do they leave a pretty good blood trail?
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Thunderhead are in the catagory of the Muzzy's. They've been used for a while with great success and a lot of guys see no reason to fix wait isn't broken.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
I got thunderheads and muzzys. but I need new blades. I'll probably shoot the muzzys because i have practice blades.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
I think they are a great head. Very STRONG.. I switched to muzzy's for a couple years and I found that the muzzy's didnt' quite hold up as well as the thunderheads.. I decided to switch back this year.. Threw one on the other night, spun tested it, shot it, and Shot right with the field point.. I think they hit HARD, Make a Great HOLE, smash BONE, and fly great too..
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Hey, How many of us Shot bucks last year??
I know I did.. Maybe we all will again this year.. Here's a few from the past.. |

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Im shooting muzzy's this year. ive heard thunderheads are good too. i might have to give them a try.
Are the blades thicker on the thunderheads? Ive also used the rocky mountain broadheads in the past and really liked the way they held up after shooting a deer with them. No bowkills for me last year :( but im going to change that this year. i found a couple honey holes, and gained permisson to hunt this chunk of land that boarder's a vegtable farm[8D] so hopefully i can put one on the ground for the team, our UPS guy came in and he told me he seen a monster crossing the road near the farm a couple weeks ago. Awesome pad you got there brad. Real nice bucks too man, im jealous:) |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Good deal Brad, I'm looking forward to using them now. Love the wood on the walls and great bucks. I didn't get one last year but I almost did. Had a limb in the way at 25 yards so I didn't risk injuring the buck and let him go. I did get one in 2005, 2nd day out.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
