Sounds like our team is running into some back luck. Maybe we should have used noisy arrows?

Nathan, a tip for a deer that close. Use your 50 yd pin. 50 yds is about the same as 4 yds and the worst that you will do by using your 50 is hit a few inches high.

Mike, that sucks about the farmer coming around. Seems like that buck was coming in for you.

I think I'm going to use a decoy next year if they are legal here. I here a bunch of people saying that they work and I think that when it's windy a visual cue will work much better than trying to use scent.

I watched a spike work a scrape Thurs morning at 40 yds and quit hunting at 1PM. I've been having a lot of back issues and I can't take a whole day in a stand. Anyway, I'm laying on my brother's coach and about 3:30 a 5 pt walks right into his yard and is standing broadside right outside his front window. He lives in a community an at first I thought I was dreaming that he was there. He slowly walked down the road. I was amazed.

Went duck hunting Saturday and got 3 mallards. We had a rough day overall but the ducks were nice. I didn't hunt Sunday and am kicking myself. The guy that owns the property called my brother and told him the bruiser buck was hanging out in my corner for about 45 minutes!!!!

This Saturday is my last chance until January to score with the bow. I'm going back after that buck that I hit and hope he comes around. With his missing foot I hope his range isn't that big and after seeing how close Brad's buck has stuck around I feel good.

I hope that our team luck turns around.

Dave, I think we'll score soon. The rut is really just now getting underway in most places. We still have late season. Last year I came with in a couple of minutes of daylight of shooting a nice buck on Dec 31. You just never know, the key is to get in the stand when we can and it will eventually happen.

Well I've got friday to bowhunt but then gunhunting opens. Im pretty sure I can hunt Friday...

Im really pissed. My buddy, hunts about a half mile to the north, really not too far at all, keeps seeing a really nice ten pointer. He said it's like 5" outside the ears and really heavy. I hope it will just happen to walk by me, or one of the other nice bucks I have seen. Im really dissappointed at the luck i've been having though.

Yeah.. War starts here on Thursday.. But I'll be doing most of my hunting with a bow or crossbow.. Very little with the rifle..

Hey guys....yes, heading to WV for opening week at hunt camp ... next week. I will be rifle hunting with my son (10) and really not shooting anything unless its a big one. He hopes to get his first buck, I hope so to. After next week, I'll be back at it with my bow here at my house. We'll see.

As far as standards....I don't lower mine. Still looking for a good one. Here in VA or WV, my expectations are a little lower than when I went to IL. If its a nice one for the area, I will take him. Small to med, they walk. I did scout some yesterday while finishing up my posted signs on my property....saw some nice scrapes and lots of rubs. No huge ones though, but a couple that were decent - looked like a decent buck making them.

Good luck guys! Talk to you when I get back from WV! Hopefully someone will get us on the board by then.

-Mike

Im hunting opening weekend here, then heading up to three lakes deer camp. I've never actually hunted (ive visited though) there but I think by then we'll be driving. It shold be fun. We have a 9 day gun season and it's longer in our zone (metro) and CWD zones, but I'd rather bow hunt.

I went out this evening for the last 2 hours. Didn't see any. Tomorrow is rifle, so they will be moving. My son & I are going...if I can find any clothes that fit him! [:@]His jumpsuit was too big last year, this year its too small....along with every other thing he has :(Amazing how much they grow from 9 - 10.

Good luck guys... we are heading to WV on Sunday for next weeks rifle opener. Then I'll be back at it with the bow.

Congratulations Brad. Can't wait to see the pictures. Rifle starts Saturday here. I may be able to get out Wednesday night if I get out of work early enough. If not, rifle starts Sat and runs for 2 weeks.

Congrats Brad, that's awesome. Good job! Can't wait to see the pics.

Here is what happened this weekend at deer camp...

Didn't get one. Sat morning was buck only and I saw 4 does. Sat night I saw one 4pt and a million cows. Sunday morning I saw a decent 6 pt I had in my scope at about 80 yards but he was too young for camp. Probably would have shot him any where else. I also had 2 spikes run right behind my stand. Last night I saw 2 shooters, first time I've ever seen bucks that big while hunting. They were both running when I saw them at about 200 yards up a hill and just saw them for a second. I think one was a big 10 and the other was a high eight. Saw one little buck as well. I'm looking forward to getting the bow back out.[/align]

Congrats on the buck brad, cant wait to see the pics.

My first fews days of gun season sucked, i seen 2 small bucks opening day and a few does the following days after that. One guy in the camp near ours that hunts about 1/2 mile away from mewounded a Big wide 10 that he never found[:'(]. This guy just cant shoot, and every other year he wounds a deer and its like he has this dosent even care attitude about it. i could go on and on about other things but wont bore you guys.
I cant wait till gun season is over!!

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

sorry i havn't posted lately
and sorry I'm so selfish. I just passed a small/decent ten pointer. I don't know whether it's a really nice 1.5yo or a small 2.5. It was just barely outside the ears, had no mass, and pretty short tines. it was pretty exciting though.

First I saw something across the pond, but it was kind of running and I didn't see what it was. It was small though. btw today was a dark misty day. then a half hour later, three does were just running around like crazy. I heard them coming at me in front of me, then they circled in front of me and circled all the way around the pond back to me. Now I saw the buck chasing them. They all went back to the other side of the pond, and I heard the buck grunting. I saw some deer leave, then another, and another, and finally the buck. In five minutes I heard something running at me again. So I stood up and got my bow ready. This button buck came by and ate some apples while the buck was coming. Then the buck took his place. by now I had drawn and was contemplating whether or not to release. I didn't. It looked at me and walked away. Thn I saw a arrow wound right on the top if the back above the sholders. It looked pretty fresh, but the buck seemed OK considering the way it was chasing the other deer and eating. I probably should have shot it, but i didn't want to deal with it tonight.

Opening day of gun season, my dad shot a ten pointer in the first 15 minutes. I'll get pics later. So I didn't get to hunt too long. I got back out at noon and I saw a small buck at three. i didn't shoot it. Since then I havn't seen a thing until now. I was like an addict suffering from withdrawl :P. But it's ok because I saw some tonight. I don't know if were gonna leave early to go up north or bowhunt here in the morning.

It's just amazing how many deer I see with arrow wounds. Last year there was one with a hair cut, this year the doe that went through teh void, and now this one. This is just in this small little area. I guess someone needs to practice just a little. THe buck my dad shot had a arrow nick in the back leg, and a little one I shot last year had a nice graze wound too.

its a little wet

On another im really pissed because I just got my hair cut. So I get the old lady with the mullett. her breth stinks, she doesn't say a word, she took forever, and she did a terrible job. I hate it. I said to cut off an inch and what, but she cut like three. and she turned the damn chair so I couldn't see. Then she left it long in the back. Just because she has a mullett doesnt mean I want one.

yea that was my dad's deer

well up nort at deer camp there were nine deer for 15 people (2 decent bucks). Since I got there , we could have had about 8 more does. I never saw a deer myself. Its really hard to hunt there after opening weekend though, especially considering I had never even walked around on the public land before.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Hey guys! Well, I'm back from a long hard week of gun season! LOL
It was a GREAT week... and I didn't kill a thing. It started on Sat, Nov 17th... it was the opener in VA. My son Garrett (10) and I had planned all year for this hunt. After makeshifting some clothes together for him (he grew like a weed since last year) we were all set to go to our favorite stand (my favorite anyhow :D). The morning was clear and cold @ 24 degrees. We walked out of the house, and were on stand by 6:25, a tad late actually. First shot was 10 mins after we got there, and a few more the first half hour. We saw 3 sets of deer during the first 90mins, all does and fawns. He was excited, but it was waning quickly the colder he got. I urged him to hang in there, that he couldn't get a chance at his first buck ever....if we were back at the house. He agreed to tough it out a while longer, and he did. About 8:20 we heard some rustling and I scoped it out with my binocs. I could see a deer making its way up through the thick stuff about 100yds away, and saw it had some antler. I had no idea what it was, but told him it was a buck. He got ready....man was he pumped. He had his gun resting on the top rail of the stand, waiting for the deer to get clear. His adrenaline was pumping, and so was mine for him. Add that to the cold...he was literally shaking like a leaf. He had to kinda stand/squat to get into postion...which made it worse. I would have felt better if he was sitting, but it was so quiet, we couldn't risk moving his seat and making any noise. I even put my arm behind him to make sure he didn't fall or something, between the shaking like a leaf and the awkward position, it made me feel better at least. I told him to try to calm down, and to take his time. The deer was locked up in a thicket, for literally acoupleminutes. Finally he started to move...and was on the go. There was only 1 spot to even get a shot at him...a shooting lane that Garrett and I cut out 2 years ago. I knew he wasn't gonna stop by his body language, so I told Garrett to get ready and I'd try to stop him. As he entered the lane...I let out a baaaa...he didn't stop. One more time, louder....he stopped right in the lane. I said....there, aim good and take him. Bang...the deer goes down in a forward flip, jumps up and takes off and is out of view in a flash. He was soooo excited he almost started crying, saying "Oh my gosh, I just got my first buck!" over and over. I was excited for him, and tried to calm him down. He said he was right behind the shoulder...I didn't doubt him and based on the deer flippingI figured he took out the offside shoulder on the quartering away shot...and that he probably didn't go far. After a 30 minute wait, and alot of talk....we get down to go check the blood. It was a great trail....he followed it right up on his own, probably 75yds or so. I was elated when we found him...and even more excited to see it was a nice 7pt buck. Whata great deer for a first buck....and the memories for both of us are priceless. He did a great job putting a perfect double lung shot on him at 80yds....that little .243 is awesome! Here he is.... :D

Here is where we found him....where he fell...

Here we are together..... what a morning!

Now....for the rest of the story! Sorry guys, I am still excited!!!

We head to WV for opening week at hunt camp on Sunday. He's already beaming as we roll into camp...the pressure is off. He has the horns with him to show to all his relatives...and gets lots of praise. Oh, and by the way....5 hours after his kill he says, "dad, my face hurts...I can't stop smiling" :D

Fast forward to opening morning in WV, Nov 19th....we are on stand before light. We see a few deer and had a doe and little one come right up to us and lock on us for 10 solid minutes, at 20yds. He did a great job not getting busted. We were sitting in a fallen tree top, right on a logging road and they were coming right at us. Momma knew something wasn't right and they turned and went around and down out of sight. It was pretty foggy that morning....couldn't see too well. Right after they left....along comes another one, heading in the same direction, following the doe. I see it, but can't make it out...he says "its a buck dad". I ask, are you sure? He says, yep. I say ok....get ready, I'll try to stop him. 4 tries before he finally stopped at 60yds. Bang, the deer jumps with a mule kick and off he runs out of sight....we heard him crash. We gave him about 20mins since we wanted to be sure. We go to the blood trail, and it was good. He went about 75yds as well and was piled up. Garrett and Dad couldn't be happier! Here he is....his first WV buck, and just2 days after his first buck ever! What a great couple of days! This deer ended up being 2.5....hard to believe but true. I guess my little bud did his job on the management end as well! LOL
We ended up taking a few other bucks that week... no whoppers, but some nice ones for where we hunt.My son also got 3 squirrels after he tagged out, and had a great time hunting with his cousins. We had 2 10yr olds, and 2 13yr olds. All in all a great week, and I never fired a shot! Passing the torch is a great thing...I know some of you are doing the same thing, or have already done it. Not that I'm done....LOL Thanks for listening guys! Now its my turn...back to the bow and hopefully some points for Team 19!

well I passed a massive doe cuz I thought something was following it and i wasn't sure if it was the one that had been shot already.

I would like to thank Al Harris, Atari bigsby, Jared Bush, some zebras, and most of all Mike McCarthy.

I hate it when they call game changing penalties and they can't even review them.
