Mike,
Congratulations to your son. Two bucks!!! In PA there are bucks like that. Never get a rack. Bad genetics I guess.

Well, I shot a doe on Monday at dark. Went back the next day to retrieve her and when I gutted her she stunk. Hung her up for 2 days and when I cut into one of the back legs the meat was brown and *****. She was limping when I shot her but couldn't find any injuries on her. Had to throw the deer away and am not happy about that.

I have January left to hunt archery and I believe X-mas time too.

I would like to thank Al Harris, Atari bigsby, Jared Bush, some zebras, and most of all Mike McCarthy.

I hate it when they call game changing penalties and they can't even review them.

I hear that! I don't have the NFL network so I was watching it on NFL.com streaming video. I couldn't believe some of the calls. I thought the Pac did a good job, with3 injuries going into the game and Rogers having to step in for Favre.

Dave, sorry about your doe. What that with a gun or bow?

davepjr71 11-30-2007 12:25 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

It was with a gun. I walked right by it twice that night with my small flashlight. People always say you should carry a lantern or spot light in your vehicle or camp and I learned from that. I was hunting a marsh and you have to jump ditches and cross some rickety bridges to get across some of the distches. Didn't feel like doing that in the dark.

It was cold enough that night that the deer should not have spoiled from sitting out over night.

fun2hunt 11-30-2007 02:23 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

That is strange that the meat spoiled so quickly.

badger109 11-30-2007 04:16 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

its not that the meat spoiled, it was probably wounded and infected or something. That's why I dont want to shoot a the huge doe that has already been shot.

I did. See my post about buck grunts in the bowhunting forum. Weird. I wish I could have seen him at least. Didn't see any this evening either. Will hit it next week a couple mornings probably. Hopefully he'll come back around!

Dave, sorry to hear about your doe. I have had that happen before...it ain't worth getting sick over, that is for sure. Too many deer out there for that.

Come on guys...we gotta at least get one on the board... who is still hunting? I have another month, but it gets slim pickens this time of year. Our gun season is 8 weeks long, an they are steady booming:(

I just read your thread on grunting. Do you think it was a series of buck roars? That must have been excited, you never know where it will happen, it could have just as easily been at the stand you where in. I will be getting out in late Dec again with the bow once my wife's finals are over.

I havn't posted lately.Congratulations to Mike and his son! Great toshare that with your son I bet! I have not hunted much since returning from Idaho on 11/20,I have been catching up with family and work.I have hunted two half days, yesterday and Saturday both with rifle.I saw one deer Saturday morning and none yesterday afternoon. Our deer herd numbers are down dramatically,I am hesitant to fill doe tags because I am seeing so few deer where I normally see plenty.
For the balance of the season which represents two more weekends for me I will be hunting with archery equipment.I like my chances better in my archery stands than I do hunting high in the mountains with the rifle.

Scot we have seen so few deer this year also for rifle as compared to last year. We have had really high winds which has kept them on alert. Also, we had a lot of rain this year so the wild grass was really high for camp so it was hard to see them as well.Rifle is overhere except for 2 doe only weekends the last 2 weeks of Dec. I'm going to take my 10 year old daughter on 12/22 which will be her first time going with me on a gun hunt, then on 12/29 I'm going to try to get a buck with the bow. It's the last weekend for bucks.

Glad to see your getting the bow back out, we've got to get some bucks on the board.

I went out yesterday for the afternoon huntand sat in my homemade ground blind,i seen 16 doe's and not a one buck, our buck to doe ratio is way out of wack. i sure hope they go back to the one buck law again, it wont fix the issue but it sure cant hurt. i wont be out again till the weekend, pretty soon ill be taking a doe for meat, maybe this weekend if i see a big fatty. Good luck guys!

It had my heart pumping for sure. It was one of the weirdest things I've ever heard in the woods. They were definitely grunts, just very long. So close, yet so far. I would love to have at least seen him....to know what was making those grunts. At least I know he's around, but my luck he's a forkhorn or something. LOL

Good luck guys...trying to get out some more this week, hopefully.

We had a big ice storm hit here last night. Trees are down in our neighborhood and power is out in alot of places. We are blessed to still have power. My wife and kids schools are closed today too.I'll post some pictures later.

I've been in Miami all week for work. I could never live here with the way people drive. The female population is the only good thing going for this place. I think the deer are about 2 feet tall at the top fo the ears down here too.

Congrats!

Looks like a good candidate for rattling antlers. (I've never personally rattled anything in, but I probably have scared quite a few off)

How close was it?

Congratulations on the buck. My brother had the same thing happen to him a few years ago in PA. With his both came off when it hit the ground. He said that when he walked up to it he thought he accidentally shot a doe but said he knew it had antlers. Both where embedded in the ground under the buck.

thanks guys!!

It feels great fun2hunt, but would of felt even better if i killed it with my bow.

badger....he was atabout 70yrds when i shot him.

Now i got an issue with my bow. my center serving came apart right where inockgoes,so now i need to reserve it.

anyone know if it can be done without a serving tool? i wanted to get back out this weekend and take the bow out,but now this came up so i got to fix it first.

davepjr71 12-14-2007 01:19 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

You can do it by hand without the tool. You just have to make sure you keep the serving tight as you wrap it. You might be able to wrap the serving around a pen once or twice and then wrap the pen around the string to keep it tight. It will not be as good as with the tool but it should get you by for a little bit. You definitely need some way of keeping he serving tight as it's wrapped around the string.

badger109 12-15-2007 10:31 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

the bottom of my center serving came unwound. I wrapped it as tight as i could get it and half hitched it, and it should do for one more shot (hopefully at a deer). I dont wanna take it in yet, and I dont want to do it myself because the string is practically brand new.

Tonight I saw 7 deer all does w/ fawns and one little buck

wow did you all die?

I wanna know, whats a good knife? Which ones do y'all have? I need another knife.

Edit: Though we may not win the contest, we might still clinch the 2nd most posts catagory (we're ahead of team 10 by 2 posts) We're one of only 6 teams without a buck. Hopefully I'll get lucky and stick one. I know i'll still hunt. Hopefully there's a decent buck still hanging around... but i think i may give somewhere esle a shot too.

I think that Christmas has everyone distracted.

Kershaw are very good knives and worth the money. The blades are extrememly sharp from the factor. Gerber aren't bad. i have a big fixed blade thatI use for deer more than my folding Case. Buck has been around for a long time. Leatherman makes extremely sharp knives. The blade on my leatherman tool was so sharp that I'd cut myself and not realize it until i saw the blood streaming. That was 15 yrs ago though so I'm not sure if they still ahve the same quality. So, in order probably:
Kershaw
Leatherman
Buck
Gerber

I'd like to try a ceramic blade sometime myself. Boker is one manufacturer. Case used to be a lot better but the last one I got was terrible compared to my previous one.

Hi guys, it's been a long few weeks. I haven't been out in the woods since opening weekend of gun in Nov. We just got over a big ice storm here in OK, you probably saw it on the news. About 650,000 homes lost power. We were very blessed to not lose power but most of my co-workers and friends did. Some lost power for over a week. It affected all our businesses, schools, everything especially with all the tree damage. Well, things are getting back to normal now. I'm finally heading out to the woods this weekend. I'm taking my 10 year old with me on an antlerless gun hunt Saturday. It will be our first gun hunt together and our attempt to get our first deer together. It supposed to snow on us while we are out there so we will be in a blind. I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to try to get out next weekend with a bow to try one more time to get a buck for this season.

Merry Christmas Team!!!

I hope everyone had a very safe and Merry Christmas and for any of our Jewish constituents a Happy Hanukkah.

Did you find a knife you liked Jarrod?

Did anyone get anything good?

Hunting wise my brother bought me a pair of long camo gloves for duck hunting. I also got a shotgun and rifle ammo holder. The shotgun one will come in handy for duck also.

no grouse for me,

but I got a doe. unfourtunately i made a terrible spine shot it and it needed a second arrow. but it was a nice doe and I will get pics.

i did not like seeing that deer laying there with it's back legs paralyzed. hopefully it couldnt feel pain in those few seconds until I got the next arrow in it.

Congrats on the doe Jerrod. Well guys, today my chances of getting a buck this season end and I'm at work and I'm busy this evening because it's New Year's Eve. I can still get a doe until Jan 15th but not a buck. I have to say I've really enjoyed this team, meeting you guys and chatting on here has been the highlight of my season. I really didn't get out near as much as I had hoped but I did get out as much as I could. I don't know if we'll score or not but that's okay. This weekend we had some bucks shed at the lease already. It's hard to believe the rut has come and gone another year and sheds are hitting the ground. The good news is those antlers will grow back and be better next season. Happy New Year guys, enjoy the rest of the season if it continues after today.
