RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
No monsters today. Just 2 big does, bambi and his cousin. I dont want to shoot them yet, because those does are the reason I see bucks. Plus their fawns are still with them and they will be bigger in November. Now I think I will have to wait until October when the action heats up.
Rembmber when I was conplaining of how the string from my rest pops up and hits the fletching? Problem solved: I just put a wrist sling around it. It doesn't affect anything but keeps the slack out of the way. Is it a good idea? |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Well, the first day started off terrible. Hike back into the woods. Climb a tree, put bow on lap to relax, and then realize that I forgot something that an archer can't do without. [:@]
So, have to climb down and find my way back to the truck. It's getting light now so I decide to take an alternate route back to my truck instead of cutting through. Dumb idea. I jump a big buck that was heading towards my stand.[:@][:@] Spent the trest of the day watching birds and squirrels. The good news is I know there's a big buck in the area. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Hi Dave,
Did it start with an R and it enables you to pull your bow string?Good that you saw a nice buck! |

good luck you guys and dave dont worry it happens to the best of us and i know youll get that buck

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Thanks for the encouragement guys. I hope I see that buck again but closer.
Scot, It starts with an A and goes in the quiver that I left in my case.!! How stupid is that to not realize for 40 minutes that I was missing my quiver. I also realized that the area I was hunting was terrible for the weather. High winds and open. I should have went to one of my other stand locations down in the valley. There were lots of tracks from the night before the rain and wind started. Jarrod, Do they have Sunday hunting in Wisconsin? They are allowing it this year on private land in October for the first time. Nate, You gotta fix your avatar buddy. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Dave don't worry about it. You'll get him. Jerrod, glad to see you are out there too. Good luck guys!

If all you see is that doe, eventually there will be a buck tagging along.
Dave, did you go back out on Sunday? |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
I walked quite a bit in the woods over the weekend.Set one stand, walked a new area.Walked in the area where I had gotten the sow and cubs on trail cam and got to see them in person at about 75 yards, when I saw the sow I immediately began scanning the woods to make sure I wasn't between she and the cubs.Fortunately I wasn't,she didn't seem all that bothered she just turned and walked away with the cubs in tow.
In the new area that I walked, which was an area I went into with a friend who hunts it (so I wont be hunting it) we saw atremendous amount of bear sign. There were at least four or five white outs that bears had been up and tore limbs out of to get at the acorns more easily. It is amazing that they know which tree's have the best or most mast in them.I think my friend will have a pretty good opportunity at a bear in that area. I practiced yesterday afternoon with my nephew who is just starting out at the age of 16.He was shooting at 20 yards and was doing better but scattering arrows. He informs me that when he is huunting this year the furthest distance he will shoot at is 35 yards.I will have to have a long talk with him prior to him hunting. He is a great kid and is a very good athlete,I don't think he is used to some of the suttle things necessary to be successful with archery equipment.Hopefully we will spend some time together hunting.I intend to have a couple of spots where I set up two tree stands. In the same tree actually. If he is capable and I don't know that he will be,I would like him to cut his teeth a very close shot.I am still unresolved as to what I will do if a good buck comes in when we are together,it probably will be part of the deal that bucks of a certain stature are my shot opportunities. It sounds incredibly selfish to say that, but I work hard at it and in our area you have to work hard and be very fortunate to get a crack at a good buck. I would be interested to hear your guy's opinion about this.It would be a little different for me if he was spending time in the woods or practicing dilligently,he is doing neither, but he has football and his studies.I will have to mull this over a bit. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Jarrod,
Mike,s right. Eventually a buck will be following that doe. One year I passed on a shot at a doe and it ran up over a hill. I decided to follow the tracks and when i reached the top of the hill there was a second set of tracks. Followed both sets for a while and saw a buck in a thicket that was trailing the doe. Never got a shot off but it taught me a valuable lesson. When the rut is on the bucks will always be around the doe. mike, No Sunday hunting in MD for Sept. I'll be back out after work Friday and then on Saturday. Scot, I'd simply tell him that you get first choice at the bucks. You've put in the work and I would see it differently if he helped scout and such. Plus, it will tach him patience and he can watch how it's done by an experienced archer. Furthermore, you are bringing him along to hunt with you. If it was a son or daughter I probably would feel diffrently about it. Best thing he can do is shoot a doe at close range to get the feel of taking a shotat a live animal with a bow. I definitely agree about you having a good talk with him about the distance.I practice a lot further than 35 yds and would think hard about taking a shot at that distance. In the woods you get a true feeling about exactly how far that is and what can go wrong. i was rangefinding some trees Sat and just amazed at what the distance looks like sitting up in a tree. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Scot, I agree with Dave. Set the presidence up front. He can take a doe or a 1.5-2.5 buck but any older its yours or whatever criteria you want. If he is in sports he should understand that. Tell him he has to earn the buck by first getting X.....this will give him something to work towards and it will let you know how committed he is and how hard he is willing to work for it. I do this with my nephews ( I have 4) and my kids.

Thanks Guy's!
I want to comment about how many spelling and gramatical errors I made on my last post.I know you guy's are not proof readers by profession, but when I read my last post over,I thought jeez Scot what the heck were you thinking.Sorry about that! Yes, I am going to have to letmy nephewknow that a 35 yard shot for someone who cannot yet group into a softball size group at 20 yards is not something that is responsible nor will I witness it. My normal practice routine is from 40 yards and I am comfortable and confident at that distance but I would keep my own shot's to 30 to 35 yards. I feel a little long in the draw lately.I wish I had access to a top notch tech who sets up and fine tunes target shooters equipment. You wouldn't think I would be long at a draw length of 28.5 inches for me.I am 6'2" with pretty long arms.I shoot with an open stance which has me shorter than if I shot with a closed stance.I just feel like I am pushing my bow arm out to far, that I am not back in to the bow arm shoulder socket enough.Anyway,I am shooting fine, just want to fine tune. You fellows that are hunting have to keep us posted on how your hunts go.I am sure you will. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Well Guys.. I checked my three cameras today.. One was set on 1 minute and all the pictures were sucked up in a matter of 5 hours.. So nothing to show there. THe other camera was never ON.. the battery door was open on the camera.. and the other camera had one decent buck a 7 point.. Missing a brow tine.. prolly score around 90 or so.. But I accidentally deleted all those photos.. So needless to say, It was a BAD week of Pictures. Hopefully next week when I check again, We'll have MORE and a BIG buck...
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Scot,
I don't pay attention much to that. Sometimes we get carried away in the words. That is suprising that draw length isn't too short for you. However, my friend shoots at 29" and he's almost 6'3" and keeps is left arm bent pretty far. He thinks my draw length is too long for him. Brad, You need to get that buck. Hopefully, this Friday or Saturday I can get that buck, or another one and get us on the board. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Dave, I am just a physical freak of nature,my arm is not bent,no locked out but not bent.
Sorry about your photo's Brad! I have done that as well and it is like a double whammy, you feel foolish because you have done it and you didn't get to see what was photographed. |

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
If the bucks where in that area last year they are there now. They will come out soon as the pre-rut starts to break out.
Matthews, we had that kind of thing happen at our lease to. At least you saw the 7 pt, that's a great sign. I'm sure his brother's and hopefully dad are not far away. Scot, wish I could help you on the tech side but I'm just now learning all that myself. This is only my 3rd season with a bow. I'm a 29" draw at a short 5'9" but I have mine set on 28" to get a little more control. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
sorry have not been online much been scouting and hanging stands season starts a week from this saturday. what deer i have seen looks like a good season ahead.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Scot,
Is your left shoulder tucked in? I'm not an expert but maybe able to help out a little if there's an issue you want to correct.I noticed that I can shoot my buddy's Switchback with almost the same form as my Allegiance though. Jarrod, You may want to think about pre-rut scent. It worked once for me a long time ago in early October in PA. Chuck, Thanks for stoping in and giving us a heads-up. Shoot straight and good luck this year and I hope you get a buck. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Hey guys...Well dave at least you know you got a nice buck in your area. you kinda hate to find out the way you did but.... SH!t happens. I forgot my release one time, and i could of had a big BEAR if i would of had it.
All i got is 2 pics on my camera 1 doe and a spike horn. the season is getting closer only 2 weeks now...i cant wait to get out there. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Sounds like everyone is gearing up to go soon. This is awesome! I love this time of year. I could smell fall in the air this morning. Chuck that is great news. Glad to hear your options are looking good! I saw your Fred Bear signature, thats what kind of bow I have. I love it.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Thanks Dave the left shoulder is down and in.I am always trying to achieve bone to bone form. That is what is bugging me a bit I feel like I am coming out of the left shoulder socket a little to much,if my draw length was a little bit shorter I wouldn't be able to do that.It is no big deal,I hunt with a pinky trigger and use back tension to trigger my shots so draw length is critical.I have had archery instruction with a nationally known(controversial) instructor,Bernie Pellerite,a three day coaching certification course about 6 or 7 years ago.I could use a refresher.Bow set up is so critical to good shooting.I have to find the right pro shop, hard to find in rural area's.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
I hate when it feels like something is out of whack. I spent about a month dealing with that this summer and one day everything clicked back in. I hope that things work themselves out for you.
My problem was such a little one. My release elbow was sticking out and it forced my arm up which in tern shortened my DL. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
ORIGINAL: tsoc Thanks Dave the left shoulder is down and in.I am always trying to achieve bone to bone form. ![]() |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Some people let their bow shoulder come up towards their neck when they are either tired, or the bow DW is too high, or their form breaks down. Bone on bone is a term for keeping the shoulder down and locked into place.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Ideally you are trying to take as much muscle tension out of your shooting form as possible, the more muscle involvement you have in your form the more tension (shaking) will take place. With your bow arm shoulder back and in you are allowing your bone structure to hold the bow versus your muscles which will have you be steadier.
I wouldn't mess with your form now.In the future though to look in to these things may help any one shoot better. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Check out this doe with no tail that showed up on our trail cam. Think it was a coyote?
![]() ![]() |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Wow, that's pretty wild. I'm sure something ate it's tail. She also has a big patch on her hind quarters that looks like it's probably the same incident as the tail. That's great that she has a fawn. She's obviously healthy. I'm amazed it's still in spots.
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
That's why I don't shoot any does until gun season here. Even then they still have the fawns hanging out with them. I have to make sure they are old enough to leave mom before I shoot each time. I shot a doe last Nov 19th that still had milk in her. I couldn't believe it. I felt bad until I saw her 2 button buck walk by my stand. They were old enough.
Here is a picture of her... ![]() |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Well it's Wed evening, 2 more days and then the weekend. Who's hunting on Team Quite Arrow this weekendand what's your hunting set up going to be?
|
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Well my bow's only 60#, and I never think of my shoulder position. I just hold it out there, relaxed and not locked out, and I can shoot all day (well not quite). I can't shoot back tension yet (I really never tried for very long) but I try to squeeze not punch the trigger, while pulling through with my back.
I have a pic from last week (about Friday) where I think it was a spotted fawn. Two other fawns I see are bigger. One has little buttons and is a little smaller than another doe fawn. I also have pictures of a little buck with a big cyst or tumor or something on the hind leg And howcome the fast reply never works? |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
I'll be in the woods Friday about 4 PM and then back out Saturday. It's supposed to be in the 80's!!!
Some people either let their shoulder creep up above a locked position or extend their shoulder out due to draw length being too long. Either way the form breaks down and there will be a lot of inconsistency in your shooting. Post the pictures please. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Thats crazy that deer tail is missing, must have been attacked by something, probally a yote, or maybe it was born without one [:-]
What do you guys think this one will score?...back in the day this one would be in trouble if he walked under my tree. i know there are bigger ones in the area, but i cant seem to get any pics of them. Im going to try and post an arieal photo of the area im hunting and maybe i could get some input on some potential stands sites. |
RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread
Big body for a spike. Score 20-25.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Good luck to you guy's who are able to be out there.Be safe, have fun,put the big one on the ground! |
