Dave are you pumped? 4 days!!! That's awesome! Last night my 7 year old came home and had to write a report on an animal. She picked deer because of our day together. My older daughter is 10 and she actually has been interested in hunting for a couple of years and we went on our first hunt together last October. We have made a plan where she will take her first with a gun in 2 years after she gets her hunter's card and learns to shoot more. She has only been shooting a pellet gun up until now. I'm excited, and look forward to days ahead with my kids in the woods. Here is a picture of me and my 10 year old in a blind last October and she is looking for deer with her binoculars...

Mike,

I'm very pumped. By Friday night I probably won't be able to sleep.

That's great that your daughters enjoy the outdoors, especially hunting.I do hope it continues for a long time. What's the legal age for hunting in OK?

It seems like most kids today want to sit in front of a PC or sit around in general.

fun2hunt 09-11-2007 12:25 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

They just have to be able to take the class and test and get their card at any age. They just need the H. E. cardand a $10 deertag until they are 16. At 16 they have to buy a license and pay the full $20 for a tag. This year they changed the law in OK where kids can get a buck and a doe in mid-OK for the youth weekend. Up until now it was just a doe. Best opportunity in history for a kid to hunt deer. It's before Muzz and gun and only 2 weeks after bow has started on Oct 1st.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

One other thing...I think they like the outdoors because I have been taking them fishing since they were 2. They can hold there own with the boys and usually know more. Makes dad proud!!!:D

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

That's wild that some states have no minimum age. In PA it's 12 years old and I couldn't see myself going out huntingyounger than that even thoughI started shooting 22's at 4-5 and shotguns soon after.

They started the early season in PA a few years ago. For kids it's great. Being an adult that only gets weekends to hunt I'm on the fence. Part of me thinks it takes away from the tradition of buck season in PA and makes the deer more skittish for archers. It was like a holiday the week after Turkey day due to so many kids taking time off to hunt/ like a right of passage.

Overall, it's probably good for the sport. Kids won't have to worry about their first introduction to firearm deer hunting being the madness that is the first day and week of firearm season. As a result will probably be ready for the regular season or if parents prefer they only hunt the October season.

Sounds like you are doing everything right with them. Keep up the good work.

My latest weather for Saturday is low 70's for the day and mid 50's for the night. Slight chance of rain. The forecast keeps getting better. some light rain at times would be nice to maybe get the deer moving.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

I understand what you are saying. I haven't bow hunted anywhere that had a youth hunt so I've never run into any problems. The weather is getting better. I can't wait to hear what happens Saturday. I'm surprised there are no new deer posted after this last weekend. I know it was opening weekend for several hunters in the contest.

davepjr71 09-11-2007 01:51 PM

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

It was not so much an issue of the hunters as it was as how it effected my season.

The first year they started it you were not allowed to use a bow that weekend.I didn't know that and had driven 3.5 hrs to PA just to archery hunt that weekend. After that it was doe only and I didn't have a doe tag. This year is the first that they are allowing buck.

I just hope that the early season translates into more adult hunters.I agree that it's never been better for youth hunters and i hope more take advantage of something we never had.

I'll probably be telling a tale of siting in a tree all day and watching the squirrels play. I'm trying to decide ifI go for just buck for a while or shoot a doe to take pressure off.

I'm amazed at that also. Only 2 deer submitted. A whitetail in velvet and a blacktail in velvet. A few states start this weekend so it should pick up. Hopefully,I will be submitter #3.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

In OK the parent or adult with the youth can bring a bow while they youth hunt. As of 2 years ago we can bring a bow to any gun hunt even if its Muzz or gun season. As far as Saturday, I don't think any of us expect you to turn down a doe if you have the opportunity. Have fun.If it was the rut I could understand waiting to see if a buck was following but I think the first day out it wouldn't hurt if you took a doe. Especially since you are not hunting a specific buck you know is in the area.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

My buddy was having the same problem. I'll ask him again what he did to correct the issue.I believe that he had to go into his profile and fix something.

I'm not hunting a particular buck just an area that has sign. I've decided that for the first day I am only going to shoot a buck. i have a lot oftime to shoot a doe. Of course, we'll see how i feel Saturday. If anything I'll wait until late in the day to decide.

3 days to go!!!
Weather forcast:
Friday night: 64 deg mostly cloudy SE wind
Saturday: 74 deg Sunny NNW wind
Sat night: 52 deg

I've lost my light rain and the temp is a little higher. Wind is going to do a 180 from Friday to Sat. The place I'm hunting has enough woods that the wind just swirls around. Mycloths are packed tight and I'll be 20 ft up or so using white acorn cover scent sitting in a white oak.

This morning felt great. It's in the low 60's.I woke up at 4 AM thinking it was Saturday. :D

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Dave I'm pumped reading about Sat and I'm not going. Should be a great day. If you in a White Oak with acorns the odds are in your favor. I hope you get a great buck.

One of my favorite commercials is the guy who's alarm goes off at around 6a or so M-F for work and by Friday he is so mad at the alarm he crushes it on the floor. However, it goes off around 4a or so on Opening morning and he jumps out of bed. Oh how that is so true! LOL :D:D:D:D

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Its opening day here in the Northwoods,
And I'm sitting in the tree with all my hunting goods.
I range a tree and then a stump,
when I feel the urge to take a dump.
The urge is fierce and i cannot hold,
so i climb on down without my bow.
I lean my back against a tree,
when the devil comes out and then the pee.
I think about the night before,
I shouldn't have had those 3 shots, or was it 4.
I'm nearly done, about to set sail,
when in the distance is a Monster Whitetail.
I quickly put my clothes back on,
when OUCH, i zipped my tiny dong.
The pains horrific, but i get through it,
and climb my tree in hopes to shoot it.
The buck walks in and inches closer,
and there's a doe, he tries to Hose her.
She runs off and he follows,
over the ridge to the next hollow.
As i watch, my heart sinks,
when I realize something stinks.
I look around and, AHH, Alas,
I forgot to wipe my frickin a$$.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Not a lot to report.I have attempted to post I believe three times previously and it hasn't happened so I said the heck with it.I have one month and one day to go before I can hunt so I still have a ways to go.It has gotten a little cooler and it seems like the bucks are starting to move.I stopped to see a contractor who is a client of mine and he had told me about two bucks he has seen next to our home that I havn't seen.A four pointer and a six pointer,I have no interest in them other then their survival.I went to two barbecues this past weekend ANd was being told about all kinds of big buck sightings around the area I live and I was like jjez,I travel our roads as much as anyone why aren't I seeing these animals.
I will set a couple of more stands this weekend.Hopefully will start to get bucks on the trail cams.
Good luck to Dave and anyone else who will be out there shortly!

Sometimes I think it's better not to see nice deer until you are in the woods. I had never saw the buck that I wrote about earlier until the day I choked on him.

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Hey guys

Finally able to get back in...not sure what was up with that.

Anyhow, scrolling though reading the thread. Nice pic of the bear...I see 1 or 2 of them every year in WV at our farm. Have not killed one, I never see them during the actual archery bear season..except one dink one time a few years ago that no way was I gonna take him. Had 2 within 15 yds of me last year during gun season while I was still hunting.Decent sized 250 - 300ish--that is always fun. I have seen a few 400 plus, awesome. Saw one that scared me a few years back....HUGE. Saw one yesterday dead on the road in the median....not too big.

Deer...I've killed probably about 60 or so in 20 yrs of hunting. Around 30 with a bow...about the same with a gun.I can't even count how many I have passed up. The past 9yrs, I am very selective of what I shoot...mostly all does. Don't shoot bucks anymore, unless they are a trophy (to me). Never taken a real big one ever....gun or bow. They just don't get that big where I hunt unfortunately--but I still won't shoot a dink--taken enough of them early on. I enjoy bow hunting more than anything...but still gun and muzzleloader hunt some too. My main goal now is hunting with my son when I can. He's 9. I've been taking him since he was real little, he loves it. He got his first deer last year....a nice doe. .243, dropped her like a brick about 30yds away. He was soooo pumped, and I think I was even more excited for him. In VA & WV kids can hunt, no age limit. He did great for an 8yr old. Shot her offhand due to where they came in on us...hit right behind the shoulder. Looking forward to this year...his goal is a spike! Exactly what a first buck should be :DMy daughter is 6...she's been going with me a couple years now too....she likes it as well. She was asking me today, when the season started and if we could go in "That big stand we went last year" LOL. Looking forward to it.

Dave...good luck, hopefully you'll get us on the board. I was out shooting this evening...and with my beat up practice arrowsI still shot a 4" group at 35...can't complain, especially since I haven't shot much this summer since I've been so busy. Starting to get the itch.

Mathewsboy...LOL...you ain't going no where. We gotta have at least one poet on the team [8D]

-Mike

RE: 19-Official Team Quiet Arrow Thread

Mike,

Good to hear from you again and thank you. That's great that both your kids like to hunt. I think a .243 or 6MM is a perfect starter rifle. Congrats on his first deer. Is he interested in archery?

Heck, my brother still uses his Remington Model 788 .243 after 23 yrs and gets deer every year.I made the mistake of choosing a .35 cal Marlin 336 for my starter rifle and it kicked the snot out of me when I was young. My dad says he shouldn't have let me choose what i wanted and got me a smaller caliber.

Two days left. Woke-up at 4AM again raring to go. Shot my last 3D of the season and was drilling everything out to 40 yds pretty much right where I was aiming. I have a focus problem shooting practice and sometimes look at the whole target instead of my spot. Temp in the low 60's this morning.

Weather for this Sat:
AM: 62 w/ showers wind NNW @ 20 mph (New raingear gets tested)
Day: 72
PM: 50

The area I'll be in is pretty dense. So, hopefully the wind will not blow me around too much. I think deer are skittish sometimes when it's like that too.

If I get anything I'll post it here before sending it to Rob. I've decided that I'll shoot a doe in the afternoon if no buck shows up in the AM.I need to get my nerves settled down.

I'm hoping the login issue is corrected soon. Clearing out your history and cookies is supposed to fix it. However, from friends i know it doesn't.I had to create a new favorites link too.

If Brad doesn't want to be part of the greatest team in the history of HNI and soon to be champs we can leave him off of our championship banner and trophy. We probably should dock him pay too for causing trouble in the ranks.:D;)

A quiet arrow is a deadly arrow. We're like ghosts in the woods and our arrows all fly true and cut through the air like a breeze.

I think we are the sleeper team that surprises everybody. I think we are going to do very well and I'm not just saying that. Get everything ready guys, make your lists so when the moment of truth comes we are ready. I'm speaking to myself to. I bought my second release last night I'm going to keep in my pocket in case I drop one from the stand...I use a thumb release.

Brad, you'll want to stick around.

I haven't checked it out in a while.

Two days left. Spent an hour or so organizing my bag and organizing all my clothes in my box. Checking the batteries on the GPS and making sure it's all ready. Built a few arrows last night too. No change in Dat forcast except for lower winds.

I think everyone on our team plan on being in the woods this year.

I'll be up at 4:00 AM tomorrow morning and in the woods by 5:30 at the latest. The temp for tomorrow is 70 deg for a high and 48 deg for a low. The thing I'm concerned abou now is the wimd. 17 mph isn't that bad but more than I'd like.

Thank you Mike & Mark. I just finished repacking all of my stuff in my pack and just remembered I need to go buy some bread for sandwiches tomorrow.

I'm still a little indecisive on which area to hunt. Acorns or thicket that is a funnel? I know the deer will be going to the acorns if nobody spooks them. However, I also know that if people are out the deer will probably stay in the thicker stuff.
