Actually Kodiak...I was curious abuot Alaska. Are there large tracts of land to buy up there for cheap, or is it expensive? How much are tag prices? Lots of public land i think you said, is it quality? Are there lots of hunters up there? Tell me about it all!!!

hey fellas hows the seasons going? Its been real windy and warm in IL but it has finally cooled down. I had a 150-155 class 10-point at 25 yards but behind him was a brute. He was at 65 yards. I counted roughly 14-points but he never came in close enough. I was unsure about the shot becuause of the wind. He'll be down by the end of the season. Best of luck to all!

Bass, There's not much available to buy but the majority of the state is public land. I can't even remember what a "posted" sign looks like. The number of hunters depends on the season and area; some hunts are overcrowded and others you wouldn't have another human within hundreds of miles. The real challenge (and cost) is access; bush planes aren't cheap! Here's a link to the ADF&G website. The Regulations section has got all the area/season/tag info. If there's a specific species you're interested in let me know and I can dial you in or at least point you in the right direction. Just be aware that goats, sheep and brown bears require a non-resident to hire a guide on top of the tag and license fee.

Well fellas, I am heading home once again from school, and the word is the deer here in VA are moving a ton. It just got cold and the rut it kicking in. I am looking forward to an exciting two days of hunting, we will see how things turn out!

I did have one question for you all to help me out with. There are plenty of stands I could hunt, but I was thinking about humping up this mountain to a little saddle I know of, a good mile or two hike back. I would like to hunt it in the afternoon, silently hike back there around 1 or 2pm and get comfy against a tree. I saw a great 10 pointer there last year, and there are other big ones that roam back there, especially since theres not much pressure back there at all. I was curious if you guys think hunting with a bow for a big buck is a wise idea, I know they are smart, but if I build a good blind I recon I could draw my bow then raise up and thwack the biggun'...let me know what you all think, where to hunt this part of the rut?

Sounds like your scenario is what I do every time I go deer hunting. Just be aware that if you do get one back in there you're going to have to know how to bone it out and you'll need a pack that can handle a whole deer. Oh yeah, and the legs that can carry that 60-90# pack. My preferred method is to bring along a big non-hunting friend and let them carry the pack!Any scent control you do on a hunt like that (hiking 2 miles into the mountains) is going to be worthless so you better pay close attention to the wind. Shoot us a big'un!!!

Well I just got back from PA, had to meet with a builder of our potential new house. Figured to hunt Monday after the meeting andthis morning before I left. I arrived Sunday and did a quick scout, picked a spot between 2 fields about 100yds wide seemed like a good travel route with good sign. Set up about 3pm and within half and hour had a doe and fawn go by then it got quiet till about 5:30pm then3 more doe and a fork horn came by. Practiced drawing on 2 of them (successfully) never got busted. I couldmake outanother deer moving but it was to far to see what it was. All in all a good night. It was nice to see a buck for a change I was begining to think I had a curse on me. The morning hunt was abust, now its back to work.

Our archery only season starts tomorrow for mountain goat and deer. I also just picked up my brown bear tag just in case. If the weather cooperates we're going to take a little scouting flight tomorrow evening and depending on what we see I may come down ill at work on Friday... Time to break out the deer hat, decoy and calls!! This'll be me on Saturday:
