Remington 740 in 6MM Remington caliber
Has anyone had any experience with the Remington model 740 in the 6mm Remington caliber? I was looking for a nice deer rifle and thought this might work out alright. I know the ammo is limited, but this would be my second deer rifle anyway and perhaps the first for a child to try. I really want to hear you' lls thoughts on this one!

Right off the top I have no experience with the Remington740. It was made from 1955 to 1960.It was replaced by the model 742 which I did own a couple of over the years. Something I would consider parts for the Remington 742 are getting scarce. The 740' s parts would PROBABLY be next to impossible to locate.I think you would be better off getting a newer rifle that parts are available for.I have a Old Remington 760(pump). Remington discontinued this model. They no longer stock replacement parts for it.If and when I need parts for it I' ll be looking for a parts house that carries Remington' s obsolete models parts..The 6mm is a decent round.I prefer something a little bigger for deer, but that' s just me.With proper shot placement the 6mm is fine.

The 6mm Rem. is a great cartridge, BUT the Rem. 740' s are notably inaccurate. The reason for the development of the Rem. 742 was to correct the barrel mounting deficiencies of the 740, which was causing them to shoot patterns rather than groups. I had a 740 in .30/' 06 once, that a hunter in Alaska sold me " for a song" . It was only after I got it to the range that I found out why it had been so cheap. After a little research, I discovered that this rifle was just typical of that particular model. Nothing could be done to make it shoot.

I don' t know about the rifle, but the 6MM caliber is great whitetail medicine!
With a good 100 grain bullet, it will take care of any whitetail from Mexico to Canada!
The 6MM is already a light recoiling caliber and in a simi-auto gun it should be plenty light enough for anyone to shoot!

Older weapon. My da hunted with one. They have a tendency to jam more than the newer models. I have done some polishing on a few and improved the jamming problem.
