If anyone is interested in learning more about wildlife management I've written a book that includes this topic as well as conservation, the ecosystem approach... It's titled "The New Age Hunter." You can learn more at my website: www.anthonypmaurosr.com. FYI - Jeff H. Johnston, Associate Editor, American Hunter magazine (published by the NRA) gave the book the following review -
"Anthony P. Mauro is back, hot off another African safari, with wisps of smoke still rising from the mopane logs and the pen in his hand. But his latest work is more than a re-account of a game-laden safari.
The New Age Hunter asks the question that has wrinkled the brow of anti-hunting urbanites since the practice of vegetarianism became en vogue; a question that is imperative hunters answer before the inevitable political battles over the future of hunting come to a head.
Mauro asks why a modern person, who does not depend on procuring his own protein for survival, still chooses to hunt.
He writes, "... it is the spiritual aspect that is the most compelling reason for why we hunt, but it ranks as the least understood by non-hunters. ..."
Using an anthropologist-type study of human evolution, a psychologist's analyzation of the human psyche, and combining his empirical and biological data with a hunter's insight and a writer's gift to weave theory with entertainment, Mauro takes as good a shot at nailing this critical question since the influential words of James Swan.
If you are a hunter intent on preserving your way of life, a conservationist, a student looking for truthful answers, or a non-hunter with a desire to understand the hunter's unwavering mindset, "The New Age Hunter" by Anthony Mauro is a worthy read."
Feel free to email me with any questions. Best regards, Ant

What does this have to do with wildlife mangement?
I can recommend a book that has been around for a while and is considered the manual of wildlife mangement:
Bookhout, T.A. Editor. 1996. Research and Management Techniques for Wildlife and Habitats. Fifth ed., rev. The Wildlife Society, Bethesda, Md.
That is a wildlife management book.

Thanks for your commentary. There are many books written about wildlife management.
The practice has been around for more than 100 years. I am simply offering a unique
approach in an attempt to educate hunters not only about wildlife management techniques,
but also conservation efforts, understanding of our ecosystem and how this relate to quality
habitat and healthy wildlife populations. Ethics, fair chase, the future of hunting as well as
huntings origins are coverred in an effort to educate all huntsmen about the importance of
hunting and hunters to the future of wildlife. The information can be used to address the
emotional rhetoric of the anti-hunters or to simply understand that hunting serves a bigger
purpose than killing animals.
I'm glad you take an interest in wildlife management and that you have your "favorites"
when it comes to authors.

I take more than an interest, it's my profession actually. Could you provide some exerpts from your book relating to wildlife mangement techniques that would be unique/useful to a wildlife manager?

Thanks for getting back to me.
The book is not a "how to" book and is not designed to be used at the university level to teach wildlife mangement priciples or techniques. Their are text books and university courses designed for professionals such as yourself. I don't believe that I represented it in this manner either.
The "unique" aspect of the book is not that it offers "ground-breaking" approaches to wildlife mangement - but that it explains how the concepts and workings of wildlife management, conservation, ecosystems, and, also combines this with an explanation of the origins of hunting, the psychology of hunting, the politics that embroil hunting, the forces working against hunting, - to educate hunters so that hunters may educate the "uninformed." The concept is that hunters need to change their mindset from simply enjoying their favorite pasttime to becoming educated about the sport and the science involved in it (harveting biological surplus...) so that they may educate others - that's why the title of the book is "The New Age Hunter."
If the "layperson" begins to understand the above dynamics they will certainly better understand the noble profession you've chosen.
