Default Oats and Rye?

Over the 2 years that I've been reading info on this site, several of you you have suggested Buck Forage Oats and others Rye. I'd like to plant a strip of each this year as test plots. When I go to the local Feed Mill, what exactly should I ask for? Second, what do I need to do to these to make them succesful?(mow after it gets ? high, leave it go?) I'll have the ground prepared correctly.

thanks!

Buck Forage Oats are a name brand, and I've had really good results with the planting. What's nice is that the BFO's experience freeze-out and die at some point during the winter, but mine were green unders snow in mid December last year here in the U.P. of Michigan, and were my best draw on the property.

I would encourage you to plant either annual rye or oats, in combination with clover. The rye and clover combo can be mowed the following year, but you will experience a very good stand of clover the year after your fall planting.

Also, annual rye can be successfully broadcasted into plot failures or overly browsed plots in mid-september to increase deer activity during hunting season.

I've had friends downstate that have planted MI oats side-by-side with BFO and the results have been dramatic. The BFO's stayed green much longer, and the deer walked over the MI oats to get to the BFO's. The BFO's remained much shorter due to the high browse pressure.

I'm sure there are plenty of other places online that you could find through a simple google search. i don't personally have any experience with online seed vendors.
