he said that brass was the only thing he could use that would stick to the cast metal.

Brass and the old Heliarc. Did he heat the whole gear when he welded?

i' m pretty sure he heated the whole gear. there was rosin/flux all over it, and the gear seems to have taken on a slightly different color after i got it back. it could have just been the oil that burned off, i' m not sure.

Glad you got that geaar fixed. And happy I could point you in the right direction. I knew an old welder that, to make a pun, could weld just about anything but paper. Other welders used to go to him when they had a problem. I watched him operate a jig for making multiple parts while he was doing other projects. It was an educaztion to watch him.
