Crop fields that are normally soybeans are cotton this year. Not good. I want to take my friends Grizzly 660 4 wheel drive and break up and plant a ring around the perimeter or cotton. This will be ground that was broken earlier in the year and now growing in cotton and weeds. I have never planted before and need some help as how to be successful. Looking at small pull behind disks and cultivator but don' t even know what I need. Any advice? Just plan to plant something fairly easy (break up, sow and drag).
What do I need to get?
thanks,
Dayton

Ranger, I have used a simple pull behind disk with my 4wheeler and got good results and then broadcast seeds and come back with a drag to cover seeds.
Have you talked to the farmer? There is a lot of cotton grown in my area and the farmers routinely spray the cotton until it reaches a certain height. There is a good chance your planting will be damaged during these sprayings either by the farm equipment or the spray. Also, sometime around late Sept. or Oct. the farmers here usually spray a defoliate with a crop duster airplane or on smaller acreage with sprayer rigs on a tractor. The defoliage they use is very effective on everything in the immediate area. Not trying to discourage you but you probably need to talk to the farmer first and see what he thinks.

This is what I did. We had a tractor brought in summer of 2001, and plowed up a thick sod field area. I later dragged it out w/ my atv and set of drags. We left the sod to rot, then limed it last yr. I weed killed the field this spring. Then simply went over it again with the same set of drags. It took me a good 5-6 passes over it, no biggy. But it broke it up again real well. I spread my seed, then went over it with a set of bed springs to cover the seed, then with a lawn roller to pack down the seed. This was for clover. I could' ve used a small set of disc, but couldn' t find any to rent, and having my dad' s set of drags I figured why buy some. Whatever you do I wouldn' t wait too much longer before planting, so it gets a decent length growing season!
