Problems with Cattle
#1
I want to plant some food plots but there are cattle on the property. I can't afford to "fence off" an area to keep the cattle out. What other options do I have. Has anyone used the scent that will repel deer and would it also work on cattle? I thought that I might be able to tie the scent line onto the existing barbed wire fence so the deer could enter the plot by crossing the barbed wire but the cattle wouldn't cross the scent soaked line that surrounds up the other three sides of the plot. Has anyone ever done this? Do you think it would work? The main thing is that the cattle be repelled by the scent like the deer, and that the deer would still enter the plot with the scent on 3 sides of it. This seems like a cheaper way to do this than spending $ for Tposts and barbed wire.

First off I want to let you know that I raise cattle and have been around them my entire life. So based on that experience I can tell you it is not going to be easy. The cheapest way is going to be an electric fence. You may need a solar powered fencer. Any scent that will repel cattle is going to scare deer to much to use the food plot.
I have got electric, barbed wire, board fence and woven wire around my pastures and I can tell you if they ever get a taste of your food plot, they will try all kinds of tricks to get back to it.
sorry not to be of much help here, maybe some these other guys will have some ideas.

Solar powered electric fence is about the only option. I would use the large diameter wire rather than the small common electric fence wire. Deer will tear that small wire up every night.

There are 40 head of cattle on one of my hunting spots. I have a 3 strand barb wire fence to keep them out and it works very well. Have never had any get into my plots. My plots I cut out in the woods so I used trees for most of my post saved me from having to buy a bunch of t-posts.

If you live in the area, you could also use a 12 volt electric fencer without a solar charger. These are made to run off a car battery. We have used this for our pasture that does not have any electricity. About once a week or ten days, we would replace the battery with a freshly charged battery.
