Default Food Plot Questions

I would like to plant a small food plot for next season, and havea bunch of questions.

I want to try planting a small plot inside the woods next to some heavy cover. How small can I make the plot in order for it to be useful and yet not destroyed by the deer?

There are no field or crops remotely close so any competition will not be a problem. The soil is very acidic and sandy with a lot of pines throughout the woods. What should I try planting?

Some other piece of information that should be noted are that since this is going to be inside the woods, I would not be able to use any heavy equipment. I am thinking to maybe just rake out an area and plant it in an opening.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
