How far up North for Sawtooths/Gobbler Oaks?
Just wondering how successful people are at planting Sawtooths orGobbler Oaks up North. I'm thinking about planting a few. I'm located in central NY, near the PA border.
Thanks.
Thanks.

thats a zone 5-6 tree. it will withstand -20 degrees farenheit when establihed. Plant white oaks if you are looking for fruit and have the time to wait for a crop. 20-30 years. 50 plus years to realize a good crop every 3 to 5 years.
find mature trees in and around your property. release them and fertilize them. you'll get much quicker results.

They grow well on my zone 6 property but the tops are frozen off every winter at my zone 5b property. It would help if you give them a sheltered location but if you're zone 5 expect die back after a cold winter. There are Himalayan varieties that are supposed to be more hardy that you might try to locate.

Bobco, just try a few trees and see how they overwinter. That way you won't have too much invested. Muckland is in zone 6b just like my southern property. They grow fine at that site. It's at the 5b property that they freeze out the new growth each year. When you do plant them try to pick a sheltered site similar to those shown in muckland's pictures.

I'm just a little leary Muckland. Lake Ontario never really freezes, it keep temps a bit warmer then in the Southern Tier (IMO) where I plan on planting, not saying it doesn't snow an aweful lot where you are. I've talked to a few nurseries and it's a bit iffy on the sawtooths and they are recommending White Oaks. I'm thinking about some other options like Honey Locust or Winter Crab apples. I'm putting in a small Orchard of 8 apples and 4 pears next year also (those are already ordered).
