Default Soybeans in NY

planted soybeans yesterday-
disked up good moist soils - broadcast seeded the plot and heavy rains today to hopefully seat them-

I doubt i will get a good bean crop out of it- but it was cheap and last minute-

anyone else plant soybeans and have decent success this late in the season with broadcasting as opposed to driliing the seed? (New York Syracuse area)

Thanks for your sharing your experiences

I've had them grow when planted late - I've mixed them with other things.
The deer really like the yound soybean plants in August/Sept - and they can pick off the young plants in a hurry!

You really need lots of Nitrogen, and good moisture (shouldn't be a problem this year!)
to get much size in 6 weeks before a killing frost.

Personally - I'd go back over it with Turnips/Rape seed - so that when a frost does come in Late Sept - the field isn't all done for the hunting season.

farm hunter,

i have chickory to mix in- how do you think that will work?

i really won't be buying much else at this point-

maybe i'll get lucky and it will all come up to be a nice plot-

i know you and i are relatively close - where do you get turnips from?

Chicory is a good companion crop and should work good with soybeans. Its a perenial as well, so it will come back next year - making the plot a good canidate for frost seeding clover in late winter (or an early spring overseeding)

I've tried turnips for several years - and I'm never really happy with how the deer od use them (always late) - but they do use them at some point. I get my turnips in fall mixes with brassicas - I've used Shot Plot - which is mostly tunips - and a couple other mixes like Green Patch plus - and a Gander mountain blend. I've got the from Walmart, Gander Mountain in Cicero, and The DeRuyter Co-op (old agway).
