What to plant to watch deer?
Just bought a place that has 35 acres on the edge of town. There are deer all over it. There are probably only 5 acres that are clear. The rest is woods. I want to plant something along the edge so you can see the deer from the house. Are there any suggestions. I am planning on getting a soil test done and having it done right. Next year I will probably have a bow stand or two back in the woods. Any ideas will be appreciated. I do know that the people who had the house last year said they could not have a garden because the deer kept it eaten up. Thanks, Buck&Duckman

You are wise to do the soil sample. The read out will dictate what may or may not be planted. Like DanO said, the forages ae about the best for overall, keep us posted. Believe me, you' ll get an earful. A five acre plot will have a great deal of potential.

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but if you have harsh winters you may have to resort to a timed feeder with corn and whole soybeans till growing season starts.

The freezing temperatures won' t be a problem. This is just outside of Texarkana, AR. That is on the Texas/Arkansas border. I am going to till up some of the property this weekend and get a soil sample done. Thanks for your help.

Plant a clover - if you can keep it mowed and the soil ph is 6.0 or higher.
You' ll get a longer " veiwing season" with clover than with oats/rye or wheat.
Good luck
