Default Small plots

Ok, Im new to the whole food plot thing. We don't have many of the in Southern New jersey. But me and a buddy have about 200 acres or so of woods to hunt and every year we say the same thing lets put a food plot in a food plot but we never do. This year im doing it. i think im jsut gonna get a walk behind Rotatiller and plow up a little plot. Maybe a 50 foot strip or a 20 by 30 square. I have never done any of this before and don't know much about it so any info would be great. Again im in the southern part of new jersey aka "the pinlands" so the soil is somewhat basic. the terrain is flat and some parts are swampy. So we would need a plant that the deer would like and wouldnt need to much water.

Iron clay peas. Easy to plant and grow very well in swampy areas. They dont seem to mind acidic soil either. Spray it down with monorgamite (I think it is called something else). It is basically people poo and keeps the deer off the plants for a few weeks while they get up and growing.

Do deer like them and will it help them grow bones on their head?

Save your self a lot of labor and ditch the roto tiller. Get some type of sprayer, back pack or whatever and some Round Up and spray the area that you want to do. Do it right now. Then hit it with the Round Up again mid August. Now you should be ready to plant some field rye (not rye grass)or winter wheat. Try to spread the seed just before a big rain. This should give you a start for this year.

Deer love the peas so much that that is why you gotts hit it with the people poo. Last week I was on one of my standstill about 8. I got down and walked out to my planted road. I counted 15 deer on my left and 6 on my right just flat out grazing like cows. I will have to replant the road in probably a month. They love it.

I'm pretty sure it's called Milorganite.

No it's not too late.

"Would it work if i just tilled it up and planted? "

The problem with tilling is not only is it a lot of work, you also till up years worth of weed seed that has just been sitting there waiting to get exposed to the sun and germinate. You can spray an area dead with one tenth of the effort of tilling and have a better result.
