I'm getting ready to set up salt licks around my property. I'm planning to buy 50-pound bags of salt from my local Tractor Supply. They stock an assortment of salt and mineral mixes - the most expensive one has several trace minerals and is about twice as expensive as plain salt. Is there any reason that I should spend the extra money for the more expensive salt? Thanks for any light that you can shed on this. - CB

If there are no cattle in a very large area it is pretty easy to get deer and hogs to use salt licks. I use ice cream salt in my salt licks. Just pour it on the ground The salt often dissolves in the rain and they lick the dirt. If there are cattle in your area it is hard to get deer and hogs touse saltlicks because they eatthe cattle salt.

There is no benefit to your deer to just put out plain salt. Use the mineral mix, either loose or block. If you want to make your own mix a search here should find the info.
