Default Oats

I planted 8 plots of Buck Forage Oats 7 days ago with a grain drill. I went up today to check on them and they are already up about 3" high. Just need a rain and hope the dang turkeys leave them alone for a couple of more weeks. I'll overseed with a white clover in a week or so.

turkeys are our enemy during the planting of winter plots also. funny how you can despise them so much in the winter, yet love them so much in the spring.

TC, I planted BFO on Labor Day. It is coming in nice. Then I spoke w/ the farmer, and he told me that a frost will kill it. Do you know if this is correct. Although it is coming in reather nicely, it is still pretty sparse. I disced strips in a soybean patch w/ my 4 wheeler and seeded the strips. Had 2 deer in there tonight before dusk. They have crushed the soybeans, no leaves left on the stalks. They are getting nice and fat and lazy. Better order some more corened beef brine.

There are a number of people on here that are further north than I am that have had very good results with the Buck Forage Oats. The years I have planted them in South Alabama they did not die of freezes and frost and it probably got in the low 20's a few times.

TC will probably answer you back too - but its my understanding that BFO are frost hardy - and its Really Cold weather (teens & less) that finishes them off.
