Small Food Plot??
My friends and I are looking to plant a small food plot of about 2-3 acres. We only have around 90 acres to hunt and the lands around us are hunted hard. We want somethin to keep the deer on our property and give them some good nutrition throughout the year. Any recommendations?

I got the same problem except i only got 22 acres but i go and work around it i am planning on making a plot I clear cut half of my hill and made it into bedding areas i put five salt licks up so i can see how much they like that. I try to get them to stay on my land because all the land bordering us is hunted hard and once you shoot on our land they all run to the other land so what i did is i posted all my land And now when i get my deer i get them the last day i go out the whole couple first days and if any come running to me then i take a shot but usually me and my friends will wait until the last day and a hour before quiten time and go out and do a drive and we usually get 4 or more deer so thats what i do. Something else to keep them on is to plant a little field of alfalfa a little corn and some winter weat and someclover mix it all together and they love it .

First things first... Do soil samples in the areas you wish to plant. Dig some holes so you may inspect the soil depth and know how deep you top soil is and what is under it.
Next, STOP the salt licks. Too much salt will not help matters and may well make matters worse. Too much salt intake may make the animal thirsty and then they drink and lay down. Deer need sodium and potassium and that is what makes the licks so appealing. You want the animals to eat as much as possible during the antler growing season. Research the targeted products and look for someting that contains less than 18% salt for the grwoing months.

Lunchbucket always gives good advice. This is the most common question here. Don't do anything till you get a soil sample. Will save you a lot of time and money. IKNOW. Figure out what you are going to plant. Follow the recommendations they send back with the soil sample. Talk to people in your area. Tell them what you want to do and most are very helpful. Co-ops, feed mills, your local DNR. I started with rye, alfalfa, clover. Some corn. Its not as simple as it sounds. Don't be in such a hurry that you skip a step, or you will be disappointed. And then you have the weather. terry<img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>
