I want proof from people that has used the plots or are using them at this present time. i want a plot that is around a foot or two high with good luscious browse that will attract deer as well as being beneficial for them. i need some help guys. some pics would help alot

we've had real good success with imperial clover. As long as you do your soil test, lime and fertilize it will grow. Also you have to give them time to realize how much they love it. Once they learn to hit it, its hard to run them off the plot. As far as getting a foot high it will depend on how big the plot is, the bigger the plot the better the chance of it reaching ankle high or higher. If you are dealing with a small plot maybe investment in a new deer repellent that is placed around a plot allowing the food source to get to a desired hieght and then removed. This allows for the clover or soy or whatever to be more mature and deal better with the stress of repeated browsing.

Imperial is a good product, I'd suspect others are good as well. With seed, you truly get what you pay for, and the seed itself is a small part of the cost of planting, compared to ground prep, fertilizer, lime, mowing and possibly spraying. I'm sure everyone who plants on this board will agree!

The plot pictured below is 2/3 Imperial Whitetal clover and 1/3 white dutch clover from the local seed co-op the farmers use.

It is important to keep it mowed, this plot will rarely get over 18" tall, and you do not want it to, because too many plants head out, die back, and lose their vigor. But, you do not need it very tall either. I try to leave it 8" tall going into winter dormancy. Its about 16" tall in the picture where I'm mowing. Try to mow no later than after the feild is 50% "in bloom".

If you insist on a taller greenfield, red clover, or alfalfa, or ablend may be the way to go. Just remember, like any other plant, the larger it is, the more stalky, less palatable, and less desireable it is by deer.

WOW, there you go again. I'm the same color green, with envy, as your clover. Another terrific picture of a beautiful field. terry<img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

Keep the clover and alfalfa mowed to a height of about 8-10 inches, keeps it succulant, or when it appears to be going to head/seed/blossom. If it goes to head/seed/blossom then the weeds and grasses that are in it will go to head /seed. Never mow in a drought. Mowing weeds will usually control them but will help thicken grasses. Grasses are the worse enemy of the forage plants, they'll always over take it!.
Taste the product before limeing or fertilizing and check the sweetness. If it's bitter then it needs lime. Spray the grasses as they appear after mowing the field. Never spray in a drought situation. After the fall brown out of weeds and grasses you can allow the product to grow, infact we suggest that you hit it with a stimulant to bank for the late fall/winter.
