Default Apple Trees

I live in the south on the Mississippi River Delta. We have abundant cropland and tons of persimmon and oak on all of the properties I hunt. Recently we put a couple of hundred acres into CRP on one of our farms. There are no apple trees anywhere in this part of the world and I would like to give them a try. Do ya'll think this is a good idea? Are they "deer magnets" like I have read? What varieties, etc. do I need? We have usually mild winters (lows down to 20-25 a couple nights out of the year) but brutally hot summers (can hit hundreds). Our rainfall is 50-60 inches a year.

Apples are indeed deer magnets, check the varieties you look at to see what USDA hardiness zone they're best suited for and choose accordingly.

Check to make sure the pollination dates overlap and the the trees are pollen compatable. Try to supply ripe fruit over the longest period possible.
