Can I buy something similar to a plotmaster, something to pull behind my lawn tractor for less than $1000? $1700 seems to steep for me.

There are many gadget type implements out there, but if you want to get serious about food plotting behind an ATV or small tractor, break down and get the Plotmaster. Make sure you get the electric model.

I researched the Plotmaster alot and almost bought one. I ended up going with a good disc instead. I am really glad I did. The ground I work in SE Ohio is very rugged. I can tear the place up with a 5' box frame disc and my tractor no problem. I picked up a good drag and a spreader for my tractor too (for lime & fertilizer) & I hand spread seed. I saved a bunch of money too!

If you want to be serious about ground prep go to kunzenz.com. This piece beats every one I have ever used. Its made with real tractor parts, its heavy enough to get into the soil. I've used it alot to take out old grass areas, it make easy work for gardens and food plots. Old plots can be preped to seed in 1 hr to the acre Check it out
