I was talking about plain old grain rye. I believe Farm Hunter had some good luck with it in up state NY.

Dan's right about Rye (cereal Rye) - Late August planted - its tough to go wrong with it as a fall attractant. Its easy and works from emergence through a good part of winter. Not a good spring plot at all though.

For me - nothing beats Soybeans & Clover (White Dutch, ladino and red somtimes too) for summer/early fall. Corn for Winter. I think Brassicas can work - and I try some most years like everyone else - but I'm not too overly impressed with any plot that basically "helps the herd" for 4-6 weeks per year. I like to offer a "food source" - that takes pressure off the native brush/saplings - and offers 1000s of lbs forage over several months at a time.

I don't care for mixes that use different seed types (like clover, oats and sunflowers for example) - you can't mow or spray to control weeds without hurting one or more of the seeds in the mix. Mixes of different Clover types - I'm all for that. Same with grains - like Rye, Oats & Winter Wheat.
