are you wanting to planta crop?........ if so you have to determine do you have access to equipment to plow it etc?,,,,,or jsut minimal hand tools etc?.......
this year I planted Secret Spot from whitetail institute...... its a pretty much throw n go as long as it is on bare ground it will pretty much sprout in a week if it gets a little water....I planted it all in the woods by just raking back the leaves etc
if i had access to plows etc i would plant some oats, clover, soy beans, chicory and wheat mixed

STAY AWAY FROM WHITETAIL INSTITUTE PRODUCTS!
all of there seeds are just pricey imitations of seeds you can get at your local seed dealer. If you have accsess to eqiupment like a tractor and disk or even a garden tiller for a smaller plot those would be best. if you want somthing that will last 3-5 yrs with out having to replant clover specificaly ladino clover would be best and it aids in the nutrition in deer My clover mix is 55% ladino clover 22% red clover and 22% alsike clover. If you want somthing to attract deer in the fall you would want either brassicas (rape, turnips, kale, ect.) or a winter grain like winter wheat, winter rye, winter triticle, or oats. I get my seeds from www.alseed.com they are cheap, have everything and there shipping isnt to bad. if you would like tons of more info go to www.qdma.com and click on there forums and scroll down to food plots those guys have a wealth of info.

we have a 1500 acre farm here in va and about 800 acres are corn and soybeans. about 3 weeks ago i took the atv out and plowed up about 40 acres just enough to loosen the soil and planted a mixture of ladino clovers, crimson clover, peas, turnips and about 10 pounds of shot plot and it is all coming up very fast. if you want something quick go with ladino clover and shot plot. the deer are already hitting this stuff.

bspencer,
I have to agree. I tried the save 5 dollars an acre too and had beter luck with the Imperial clover. As a matter of fact it wasn't even close. It came up quicker, looks better and lasts at least a year or more longer. But I guess other than that, there is no difference. LOL.
I used the secret spot last year on 2 places. We did spray it and rake it before putting out the seeds and it worked good. We are going to make those spots bigger this year and willtry to get a perrennial going on them. I do have a few aces up my sleeve on a few open spots in the middle of nowhere where i will use the secret spot again this year and hope they remain my secret.
I have had better luck overall with the branded products. Several companies are putting out good stuff but thereare some others who have put out crap IMO.

glad someone agrees with me.......
now next spring when i plant some more clover it will more than likely just come from the local Southern States .....hopefully i can plant a few acres of perennial clover this spring......
but for the secret spot I couldnt be happier from the results so far for just being able to use a garden rake to rake the leaves back and throw it out........... its not to easy to get a plow on a WV mountainside in the woods....lol
