Can you help me look at this antler?
I just got this from a friend. I am totally a newbie, know nothing about the antler. I just think it is beautiful.
Can someone tell me is it a deer antler or elk's? Is this a good one?
what's 4X4 mean? It is 16 points, i can tell but the tip of of the first point is broken.: (
Thanks.

Obviously any fool could tell that those antlers belong to a Great North American Snipe. They are rarely seen but can be captured with a sack, a flash light and a whistle.........
sorry....i couldn't help myself.

You got a nice elk rack there. They are usually counted as each side individually, 4x4, 6x7, etc. etc. I like the way the horns begin to palmate on the upper points. That is not all that commonly seen. Judging by the picture it looks like you have an 8x8, meaning that there are 8 points on one side and 8 on the other. Out west we count the points in this manner for elk and deer. When the people back east talk about a deer rack. They will refer to all individual points combined. If that were an eastern deer rack for example that you are holding. It would be a 16 pointer. Hope this cleared things up.

You know I think that you are correct t-bird. I never thought about a stag. I am still suffering from elk on the brain. I have however seen elk that palmate at the top like that.
