Recently we had a thaw with rain up here. The lakes have become perfect skating rinks.
This morning at 06:50 my partner spots a deer in the middle of a lake in a compromising position. It's 2 front legs had splayed out on each side of its' body and it was pushing its' body forward with only the hind legs. It would crumple to the ice, then try to stand, but could never get the 2 front ones back in line. IT LOOKED REALLY PAINFUL. Well we phoned the game warden and they showed up a few hours later, tranquilized the poor deer and drug it to the shoreline, gave it a quick check-up and waited for the dope to wear off. The deer awoke and walked away, with a slight limp mind you. They told us it had some pulled muscles in its' chest, but was no worse for wear than that.

They do not have the best traction in the world on ice, I have seen them slip and bust their butts on glare ice. Fortunantly deer are tough critters.

Years ago I saw over 15 dead deer sprawled out (dead) over the Neversink res. Upstate NY. If the ice is slick it is not that uncommon for them to slip and severely injure themselves.

Yep good work calling the authorities. And i sure hope the deer isn't too badly injured.I know when I tore some cartildge in my chest it hurt like hell and couldn't breath without it hurting. BUT, I'm a big wuss and a whitetail is an awesome survival machine. I think it will survive with no major problems.
