RE: A good question
In my area, I start seeing rutting action in late October. I call this the chase phase. I would say the best part to hunt would be during the chase phase into and through about the first week of November. I would say the rut peaks at about Nov. 15, but I don't think this is the best time to hunt because bucks will be with the does already and wont move as much until they have bred the doe.

It differs all over. It also, I firmly believe, depends on hoe cold it is. I find the colder it is, the ooner it starts. Ususally it starts mid novenber here, but this was a really warm year and it didn't start unil the first week of october. But that's up in Alberta.

Well, I am new to watching for it, but the last two years running the rut really got going hot the last 2 weeks of the season, ( Western General Centerfire 2002 Sept 28 to Oct 6 ) Season runs similar dates each year.
Sorry guys, cant believe I did that sept 28 to NOV 6, not Oct sorry.

RE: A good question
In my area thr rut peaks about the last week of October into the first week of November.
From what I have read, the studies show that the two factors that influence the rut the most are the length of daylight hours, and the moon.
The last study I read said that the photo period is a stronger influence than the moon phase, and that the peak is within a 4 or 5 day window each year. From what I have experienced, this is pretty much true. I think that when the rut hits with a full moon, it appears "weaker" because most of the activity is going down at night!

Yeah, I could care less when the actual rut is, the bucks are in the thickets with does anyway. I want to hunt the week leading up to it, when the bucks are going crazy looking for that first doe. Sometimes weather and moon reduce it, but I'll take it anyway.
Around here it's roughly 11/5 to 11/15.

In my area the peak rut is around the 15th of nov.I like to hunt the pre-rut about 2wks. before this. That way the bucks are not chasing just one doe around who is already in heat. They will cover more area in the pre-rut looking for a doe.I will rattle and use deer calls to try and lure them in.
