I'm going to set up a feeder during this off season. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to the best placement.
I'm on private land but there is a problem with trespassers from time to time. I have no fields to set up in. My choices are basically Thick cover or hardwoods? I was also wondering how long it usually takes for the deer to get used to the noise the feeder makes when dispersing the corn?

I don't know a whole lot about deer feeders and placement. But I do know that if you are going to put one up, you should move it around fairly often if the deer are going to be eating off of the ground from it. If a feeder stays in one spot too long, there will be a lot of defication and urination in the area where it is too concentrated, thus, causing unwanted diseases to your deer herd.

BOWDADDY,i have feeders out almost yearround. the only time i pull them in is turkey season. around we have alot of rouge turkey hunters. on placement i try to find hard to get to place. i don't want it to easy to find.i have some 30 gallons that i hang, high, this makes it harder to steal. i have found that the deer around here feed on mine mostly at night . the turkeys are smart. this year they would show up avg. 1 to 3 minutes after it went off. it's fun to watch them. i have not had any problem with feces in the feeder area. i have some out in the same areas for three years now . you might try a little peanut butter ,dark caro syrup or all grain to attract them quicker.also they make a persimmon corn they like that.
and yes they will stael them, i know of about four that have been stolen . i have a friend that now hangs all of his because of this. good luck.

I have had my feeders out hanging in the middle of the woods for over a year now. They seem to take awhile to find them but now they do seem to eat there often mostly at night. I have set up a deercam there so i can see when they are around.

Not an advocate of feeders only because I think most activity around them is nocturnal and I think too many people tend to rely on them and this distracts from actually learning how to hunt whitetail. Why not place it right on the edge of the thick stuff in the hardwoods? WR
