I was reading an article today and it was one of those stories where the authors buck scored 140 something Pope and Young. I never cared much about scores for deer because I really dont see many animals that size around my neck of the woods. But I got to thinking about the early September season. Can Bucks be scored for Boone & Crocket or Pope and Young if they are still in velvet?
Just curious. Thanks!

Deerslayer_37 is right. . . .a proper score does call from a drying period and a clean rack.
Just wondering. . . .where, how and why would someone be scoring racks while in velvet. Some special new season? [8D]

Georgetownboy, I don't think there is a "special new season" it's just called archery season. I have seen a number of muledeer taken while still in velvet and some whitetail out west as well, so it really is nothing new or uncommon. As far as drying and cleaning, a deer can be measured in velvet without cleaning for pope and young. There is a checkbox on the score sheet to indicate this and the record will be listed with an * beside the name. As far as Boone and Crockett I don't think they accept velvet entries due to the fact that when rifle season comes in all of the bucks have deffinately lost their velvet while the same cannot be said for archery season.

This is straight from the P&Y entry requirements page. So for all of these you can enter a velvet score. Boone and Crockett has a no velvet policy
