Each man knows his own limits with rifle or bow better than anyone else. I believe you did the right thing considering the heavy cover you described. I'm glad you chose to take the ethical route rather than the hasty reckless route. I believe experiences like this make a man a better, more controlled, and more satisfied hunter.

Well done slayer. IMO you made a very ethical decision. I looking at hunting as a game of match wits between me and the game I hunt. Some times I win and most of the time the game I hunt wins but either way it is a game and I respest the animals I hunt. If the deer didn't give you your shot, he won. Well, at least that day he won. You'll have another go at him and maybe the next time the results will be diffrent.
If you had taken a poor shot and wounded the buck the game might have ended there but you didn't and the game continues. Try to figure this guy out and see if next time thing don't go a little diffrently.

Well it looks like most of what should have been said has been said, you did the right thing, no if's and's or but's! You could hunt with me any time.

It's not important whether the shot "could" or "might" have made it through or not...you were uncomfortable with a marginal shot and you chose to pass on it. Excellent choice. Very hard thing to do and you did it. It's history now and don't second guess yourself for leaning to the side of sportsmanship and respect for the game you hunt.
Consider the mental image of that healthy buck taking off as your first real trophy from the woods. Remember...that buck probably lived to pass those genes on to a few other nice deer.

If more people would apply your thinking this fall, we'd have much fewer "I made the perfect shot, but can't find my buck" threads. Don't let your feelings sway, good job.

IMO you absolutely made the right choice. Not only because of the possible deflection, but any doubt at all can make some strange things happen even on the easiest of shots. When in doubt let him walk. Great going.
On the other hand, if you were equipped with a KEG!!! Well then you just roll it right over that sapling and end of story done deal. Just ask Taz about that technique.
