RE: Whats your stand on Elephant,Rino, Zebra, etc etchunts
As a different perspective, a single elephant hunt can pay for 5 full time game officers in Africa for an entire year to combat poachers. Elephants left unchecked will distroy not only their own habitat but the habitat of many other species.
I have never hunted elephant but I do have friends who have. Truely wild elephants are not the passive creatures that you see on game preserves or on animal planet. The wild elephants have a very uncanny sence of smell and an instinct to protect each other. THe 2 friends that i have that have hunted elephant both say there is no bigger adrenaline rush than trying to sneak up on an animal that can out run you at a walk and pull you into pieces with little to no effort. Poachers and urban sprawl (yes they have that problem there too) have done more to the threatening of species than anything else. In areas where hunting is managed as a resource game is better protected and thriving than any place else. Given the chance I will some day love to hunt elephant and hopefully try some of the meat. (I understand it is quite good) Instead of looking at it as a single hunter killing an elephant think of how many are saved by that hunt. By the way most poachers in Africa are shot on the spot (no arrests, courts, jail time). One friend said that while on a hunt the tracker and guide had spotted a poacher and went after him , after hearing several shots the guide and tracker returned when my friend asked what had happened, the guide told him he would be better off not knowing. Food for thought Rogue |

Hi JimboHunter1,
Good hearing from you;)! Wasn't I in this boat bailing rapidly just a day or two ago.......phew? I guess I got a "hot button" or two:D! I'm beginning to think I look upon these forums as a sort of "verbal jousting" and occasionally enjoy the "touche"......too much! In reality though....I think I am just a little too zealous about arguing logically against one form of hunting over another. Especially when it is because I would not personally choose to do it.....and pass judgement based upon my preferences, (or perceive someone else to be doing that)! A quote frequently attributed to Voltaire (but wasn't his) ""I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". (Actually was likely penned by Evelyn Beatrice Hall under the pseudonym Stephen G. Tallentyre in, The Friends of Voltaire. This quote kind of sums of my personal beliefs on hunting when done in any manner not contemptuous of the animal itself. We hear these and similar arguments all the time between crossbow hunters and other archers. We see the attitude between some archers and gun hunters. Or some that would choose to hunt from a tree stand....or those that would follow hounds. And we no sooner end one such argument....when another is started. And at the same time we yell at how "unreasonable" and "emotional" the anti's are. And how they never support their positions with facts. And then we turn around, amongst ourselves......and do "exactly the same thing". And I find it not only frustrating....but sometimes think I am even less tolerant when it is precipitated by "other hunters".....that claim to....and should know....the difference. And in truth...sometimes I think I just enjoy "the hunt" so to speak. (Prowling the forums....waiting to pounce;)!) Must be cabin fever! I plead temporary insanity. (Am I insane....if I'm still sane enough to question myself?) And maybe the biggest truth of all. This is still the one media where it is acceptable to really state your feelings. (Though that is quickly becoming Moderated(ors).......pun very definitely intended!) We have an opportunity to voice our opinions in a "very open forum"....and yes, we are subject to ridicule, or expected to "defend our positions"....but that is part of the challenge. We can still be "true to ourselves".....but with the catch that we will frequently be "called on the carpet" for it. And that is how it should be! What kind of a "learning environment" would it be....if we weren't required to substantiate positions...and comments....and even beliefs. It would be bereft of learning, a sterile environment, like todays public schools. Where concern for "hurting someone's self esteem" takes precedent over learning. Yes, it would be a more benign environment....but it would also be empty of thought...and empty of value! (I told the wife she gave me one too many pills today !) Hhhhoooooowwwwwllllllll!![]() |

By the way.....for all the hunters that read my last post on this thread...and you're sure I've flown the coop....go to the thread on the DeerHunting.Forum, entitled:
Is it hunting??..........or Shooting?? When you get done reading that thread....come back and reread my last post! Now I remember what set me off in the first place! |
RE: Whats your stand on Elephant,Rino, Zebra, etc etchunts
I just got the Peterson's Bowhunting magazine, and there was a story about bowhunting an elephant. Is this ethical? I wouldn't think that a bow & arrow would have enough kenetic energy.

Howdy neighbor (zrex). Where do you hunt near rocksprings? My family's ranch is between Junction and Rocksprings, west of Telegraph.
Guess we can agree to dissagree. Guess you would have to say that I hunted a bear, cause the only one I ever shot, I ate. Tasted good too! |

RE: Whats your stand on Elephant,Rino, Zebra, etc etchunts
Hi nyflyer,
Thank you for the compliment. I use to have these coversations with my son, David, (much to his chagrin I might add), and now that he is gone.....I've found myself with a need to foist them upon someone else! He was sharp...and quick witted...and kept me on my toes. (Which is a good thing for a man well into the aging process.) So for those of you which I have caused angst....forgive me my "bad habits and ill manners"....and humor a soon to be genuine old fart! Thank you. In return...I will try to keep it interesting!;) |
RE: Whats your stand on Elephant,Rino, Zebra, etc etchunts
