Thanks Tigger. I was not trying to BS anyone. I do however realalize that where I hunt is a vastly different world than most people hunt in. That area is deep and rough river Breaks from the Wyoming border to the Missouri river in the center of the state. These breake are very deep and overgrown with Cedar trees that you can' t even walk through. Surronding these breaks which are full to the hilt with Mule deer are countles thousands of acres of fertile farm ground. Those deer are grain and alfalfa fed up tp thier ears. When they come out of those breaks it is onto open fields where you can see for miles. You can set on a ridge with binos and count deer until you can see nothing in your mind except deer. I am sure that the Mule deer in western SD out number the people 10 to 1. Most people live near a city that has two or three times the population of SD. Many places in SD you can drive 75 miles and never see another car or house or anything else except deer and antelope. I am talking about the north west 1/4th of the state where there might be 2000 people. Several mild winters have helped the deer population explode. The central part of the state is even more overrun with deer but they are whitetails in that area. I Have hunted woods areas in Canada and the Black Hills but the praire deer hunting is a whole different world. Most of my hunting is just setting along those fields in the morning and evening and ambush the deer as they come out. Its a fun way to hunt and you will watch deer until you are sick of it. Its just a different way to hunt. And yes its awful easy unless you want to walk those breaks all day trying to spook some out of the tangles of Cedar trees.

Hey, what part of Indiana do you hunt?
I sat from 6 to 11 in the morning and go out of my stand, and came back at 2 til dark. I hunt with my dad and uncle, and we saw a usually 4 pointer that we' re just letting go, because he' ll be big in a couple years. I saw 3 does in the morning. In the evening, my dad had a spike that he could of took and my uncle had a 4 pointer under him, when he got out of his stand he took a shot at bigger buck but missed. Sunday morning, sat from 6 to 10, got out and tried to flush something to my uncle, and only jumped 2 does. then when we were looking for scrapes and rubs, we had a nice 8 pointer and a doe that we jumped, we fired at him but neither my dad or uncle hit him, and I never had a shot. But sunday nite, we sat for 4+ hours and didn' t see one deer, and heard very little on gun activity.

jeeze, i dont know where you were hunting at in sd, but we hunted by chamberlain, oacoma, in the missouri river breaks and have only seen about 20 deer in the past two wkends. we were hunting whitetails and there just wasnt the same pressure in the area as there has been, and most of the deer we saw were over 500 yrds away.

We were hunting North of the Wall and Wasta Area in unit 302A. There are about 65 percent Mule deer and some pockets of White tails. The biggest portion of this unit is under the control of the old Dakota Safaris. They limit hunters to taking only four point or bigger deer. This has created a big surplus of does and samller bucks. There is so much winter wheat in that area that the deer thrive. Before winter wheat came to this area the deer were pretty rare. It has created a good food source during the months that the does are carring fawns giving them a good start in life. I saw a lot of deer around Chamberlin this summer while fishing but have not been through there lately. You see whitetalis out on the wheat fields too but you are not going to get very close to them before the fly. You can park your pick-up on those wheat fields and those mule deer will walk right past the pick-up. In that farm country they have no fear of trucks and tractors. Might have room in the blind next season. Unless there is an awful hard winter there should be good number next year as well. The best White tail hunting is most likely the Black hills with lots of public land and the area north of Pierre along the missouri river. Onida and Agar and that area. I got two there last year. Trouble is I got them with my JEEP.

yah i hear ya there with the mulies not being scared of anything. we saw one when we were driving out that was a big buck atleast a 160 + buck right by the gravel road, walked up to the two does that were about 10 yrds from the road, and just sniffed em out a bit and sat there.
