RE: opening day sitting for 12hrs stright didnt see a thing
We were hunting North of the Wall and Wasta Area in unit 302A. There are about 65 percent Mule deer and some pockets of White tails. The biggest portion of this unit is under the control of the old Dakota Safaris. They limit hunters to taking only four point or bigger deer. This has created a big surplus of does and samller bucks. There is so much winter wheat in that area that the deer thrive. Before winter wheat came to this area the deer were pretty rare. It has created a good food source during the months that the does are carring fawns giving them a good start in life. I saw a lot of deer around Chamberlin this summer while fishing but have not been through there lately. You see whitetalis out on the wheat fields too but you are not going to get very close to them before the fly. You can park your pick-up on those wheat fields and those mule deer will walk right past the pick-up. In that farm country they have no fear of trucks and tractors. Might have room in the blind next season. Unless there is an awful hard winter there should be good number next year as well. The best White tail hunting is most likely the Black hills with lots of public land and the area north of Pierre along the missouri river. Onida and Agar and that area. I got two there last year. Trouble is I got them with my JEEP.
