what is grunting actually? I know it is a noice the buck makes. But what is he saying.

The only time I have heard a whitetail buck grunt was when he was chasing a doe.

I was sitting in my stand. Heard this leaves moveing around looked down. Saw a buck he was grunting, no doe around just him. It was only a four pointer.

The other day I saw one reading the paper and takin a dump, he was really grunting

Both bucks and doe grunt as a display of dominance and social behavior. I have heard both grunt at many different times of the year. Now, what does the grunt mean in certain situations and at different times of the year with deer around??....not really sure. Good topic though.
