Beagle !

As for grunting I think I'd wait for a bit ,I only grunt when I'm getting close to the rut ,as for scent by all mean's but don't use doe in heat yet just use a regular doe urine .I have a friend who's been doe bleeting and has been having great success this past week .He's already got a button buck and a doe with this and is now finished for the season .He's after me to go hunting with him but I think he's after my tag and I'm not sure I want him to use it on me , but in another scenario it might be good and I might get a shot at a nice buck ,he's been seeing all kind's of deer so I'm undecided on whether to go out with him or not .

Grunting works all year I've learned. Its using it in the right situation, thats the tricky part. Ask more specific questions..I can try to answer. Also read this story of my First Buck This Year, 2004.

You can grunt now. Last week the bucks were still grouped together but thinking of pootang. I've heard the bucks grunt. I haven't been very succesful. I think too many does too many bucks where I'm at. I'm going to try the doe in heat call this year.

Opening day here in PA is usually the first weekend of Oct....I've successfully grunted in bucks the first day right thru to the last day. The key early season is not to be aggressive......usually I never grunt unless I've made eye contact of a buck...then I'll talk to him if I know he's not going to pass within bow range.

Scents on the other hand are a waste of money in my opinion.....yes they can work but not enough to warrant the costs.

I have found a few rubs and scrapes around here so I don't think its too early for scents or grunting.

Beagle

I think you can grunt right now and have success. You may want to consider doe bleats in the early season......they usually work the best for me. As of Monday I was still seeing bucks in groups, but I think that will be coming to an end very soon. I would call it the start of pre-rut in Michigan.

Good Luck

Early October is the time when bucks are most likely to respnd to grunting. The key is not to over do it. One or two grunts at a time and try to keep them 20+ minutes apart.
