Greets,
Well, I shot my closest, a nub yearling I thought was a doe, at 20 yards or so, spooked him while walking back to the rig, he spooked me too! only shot I ever took on a running animal, got him but I dont recomend it to others. (incidentally, at that range the 200gr softpoint 7.62x54R out of my Nagant M44 carbine blew a whole lot of him out, went down spinning from the impact.)
Just my uneducated opinion!

Five feet got a five point it was late afternoon and i sat down with my back against a tree that was next to a deer trail i was looking down the hill when I heard a deer coming from behind me on the trail it made me so nervous I knew if i moved i would scare it and of course I did not know if it was a Buck or a Doe yet so I waited till i heard it on the other side of the tree turned real fast saw horns and shot nice five point one of most exciting times ever. P.S. Take a youngster hunting keep hunting alive<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I killed a nice 7 point at, no kidding, 3 steps. I was on a logging path and I was on one side of a tree and he was on the other. With a 12 gauge when I got the gun up he looked at the gun and not me and stood there until I fired. I shot the whole front of his chest off, he still went back in the woods about 50 yards. I could not beloeve it. This was 15 years ago and I have not had any kind of deer that close again.

man i feel like a murderer!!! mine was about 4-5 feet! me and my dad were walking out down a mountain on the first day of buck season/youth buck or doe season...i had a doe tag for the county...and we were walking donw the mountain...not 150yds from the lil dirt road...i seen what i thought was a yote...i was like dad! a coyote...no a doe...no a coyote! hes like its a doe...i was already on my knee..and we were behind a big tree...the deer had no idea we were there...and looked at me rite b4 i let one fly...a 180gr corelokt nailed it from 4 ft from my muzzle!! it flopped over got up and stummbled down the mountain...and didnt make it 60 yds...had no lungs...so it was jsut a crazy last energy burst...turned out to be a button buck...

First--way to go on shooting a button buck in Feb! That's one less buck you'll see in the Fall. Hopefully NJ will eliminate the late-late season as it's proving to be a disaster on the buttons and shed bucks.
Now--my closet shots have been about 10 yards and that includes the last 2 bucks w/shotgun in NJ. My scope was practicall useless!
