Well my grandfather shot an elk in Colorado and by the time he had it hung in the tree, walked to camp (about 2 hours) and came back a black bear pulled two of the hind quarters from the tree and took off with him. The Black bear actually climb the tree and got the hind quarters from the tree.

where are all these hunting dogs that are conditioned to come to gunshots?
I've never had an animal come running to me after i shot a gun, have you?
has anybody?
No, every animals instinct is to run, which is why people have to use blank guns to train dogs. because otherwise they would run away.
are you trying to tell me hunters use gunshots as a come command?
if they did they would be stupid because their dogs would obviously run away from them.
foxpros new big bang predator call: yes friends just like every time you shoot a deer and a grizzly bear comes barreling out of the woods at you. well we here at foxpro have replicated that. no bullet wasted and you dont even need a deer! so come on and ring that dinner bell.
msrp $599
would that surprise you?

Every "good" bird dog will immediately turn to look at where the gunfire came from.
Then react to their "instinct" that there is a downed bird (learned behavior).
In a world where you hunt to survive; a free meal is hard to pass up (gunfire means free food - learned behavior)!!!
"Live and learn".................. kinda like speaking out of turn.

Well, the Game Depts of WY, MT and ID will disagree with you since they have been aware of it happening for at least a decade. Plus in AK on Kodiak Island it has been known for at lest 30 years that the Brown Bears will come towards a shot when they are hunting Sitka Blacktails. The Game Dept in AK tells the deer hunters to give up the deer if a Brownie shows up and it happens a lot more often than you think it would.
But then, what do I know? I've only hunted in 13 states, 2 Canadian Provinces, done 5 safaris and have taken 68 species of game. I'm sure you have much more experience than I do right?
As to this:
I give you the following. It took all of 10 seconds to find them on google and all of them deal with grizzlies or browns targeting hunters and gunshots:

Tell me westmdbowhunter, do you have any actual experience hunting in areas with the big bears? Have you ever hunted AK, MT, WY, ID? How about BC, SK, AB? Or are you simply spouting off to hear yourself spout off?
As to the observation of the OP, I have done a lot of hunting in Al and FL the least few years and there are a lot of buzzards down here. A gutpile in the open the buzzards can get to quickly will last less than 2 hrs. Coons, fox and possums will also clean one up quick if it is stuck back in the brush. Nature is pretty efficient at recycling protein.

Guys, one thing I want to suggest: we're throwing knives over what a bear thinks about a gunshot.
Remember what we're about: the marvelous fun of going out and hunting, about seeing deer and bears and all of it. And, about having this board to share with everybody.

Amen Father Forkhorn. I remember in the 90's when we shot a lot of deer in WI (to many), I would be out logging County land and it could take weeks for gut piles to disappear. Thats not happening anymore, they're fewer gut piles, & they're gobbled up quick.

A lot of the gut piles in the 90's deer boom in WI got froze & covered with snow. I shot a moose in NH in 2004, i went back the next day, black bear hunting, to find that a black bear had a feast the night before. I was going to hunt the gut pile, but was informed there is no baiting allowed, oh well. Cool thread Father Forkhorn!
