40 yds tops. But my friends always say im too conservative. Thats fine with me though. The closer they are, the more pellets in the vitals and the quicker the kill. The last 3 deer I' ve taken with just the 3 inch 00 were dead before they hit the ground. Just the way I like it!

I would pattern the gun and see first what your limitations are. I know of a guy that uses 3 1/2 00 and has a extra full turkey choke and has taken a deer at 93 yds. I' ve seen guys shoot and down them at 60. My furthest with 2 3/4 00 was 43 yds. All depends on the density of your shot pattern and the density of the woods. By no means would I ever take a shot past 60. or ever recommend it to others.

Are deer slugs illegal where you live ? They kill more surely at greater range than shot . Shot is illegal for deer hunting in most places , and should be . Too much chance of wounding the animal , switch to slugs .

Most of the deer I have taken with buckshot have been between 8 and 20 yards. Personally, I don' t think I would go any further out than 30 yards. But like Duckmastor2, I' m probably always a little conservative.

Kevin, yes slugs are leagal here but I cant use them in th gun iI have now. It has a screw in choke. I have pattern my shots out to about 40 yards and it shoots about a 9" circle.

ncbowhunter; if the gun is a Mossberg with the adjustable choke you can use slugs if you adjust it open (IC). They also sell cheap rifled and unrifled barrels that fit the gun.

it is a farce to say how far to take a shot with a shotgun without putting up a target and trying different loads.only the user knows the capabilty of his/her gun.anyone who buys a shotgun and asks people how to shoot it ,will never learn the true capability of there gun until they shoot it.even the" norms " of 20-30 yds for the bow,40yds for turkey,50yds for buckshot,100 yds for muzzleloaders, etc.are not accurate with some guns.you just have to take the time to see for yourself!
