Going to make a prediction. Fee will skyrocket for hunting and fishing. Funds will diverted away from habitat and sportsmen benefits and nature trails and RV parks at the lakes will boom.

These new appointments REALLY SUCK.

Let' s see now - Does this make sense? A Lawyer, a treehugger and an over zealous gungrabber all appointed at the same time as State Game Commissioners.

It sounds like to me we are going to have the prettiest parks in the nation and we will not be able to hunt deer with firearms. Anything that you can hunt with a firearm that could be considered even remotely controversial now will be villified and those issues will now be shown in a new light. WE ARE SCREWED!! I' m waiting to see how long it will take for handguns to be banned for hunting again in this state. That really sucks because I love handgun hunting - and it' s jerks like these that think handguns have no place in the hunting fields.

I have a feeling I will be on my computer a lot firing E-mails and asking questions of the state and the gov' s office, and trying to get our state' s lethargic gun clubs activated for a good fight. I say that because in the hunting world here in Kansas the Gun clubs have been all but transparent. It will be interesting to see if this " wake up" call will get them motivated.

What the good gov. said with these apponitments is - I have my own agenda and I don' t care one bit about what is important to you. EVERY HUNTER in the state of Kansas should take this as the ultimate slap in the face.

What happened here is akin to haveing Bill Clinton appointed as a chapperone for your daughter. The antihunting-antigun movement has been set dead square in the middle of our state' s Game Commission.

I' m so damn mad I could spit nails. This cannot stand!!!!

The Kansas Senate Judiciary Committee January 23, 2002
SB116 Concerning firearms: Limitations on certain Civil Actions.

Conferee (Kelly) Johnston testified in opposition to SB116. He espressed concerns regarding the billl which he stated would serve to insulate and immunize the firearm industry from civil liability. (attachment 23).

We have documentation now. This guy is a main menber of " Safe State Kansas" a definate anti-gun group. If you need proof go to:
http://www.safestatekansas.org/, and see for yourself.

Why, How, could a person with this position be appointed to the KDWP Commission?

Good job Dana. Keep that stuff coming. I' m going to use as much of this info as I can in my letters to the Gov, Sect of W&P, Dept of W&P, Game Commission and varoius gun clubs.

If anyone else on this site is from Kansas - you would do well to take this advice and use this info for your own correspondances. You all need to do this. This situation is exremely critical and don' t let anyone try to sugar coat this thing and tell you it' s no big deal. Take it from me if you are going to let the ' other guy' fight this for you, you might be suprised to find out how many other guys just like you aren' t doing it either. Let' s ALL support each other and ALL join in the fight. Thousands of E-mails and letters to these Dept' s and gun clubs cannot be ignored.

GET INVOLVED - YOUR HUNTING PREVILEGES AND FUTURE ARE AT STAKE.

Gun-control forum addresses questions

By ALICIA HENRIKSON
The Capital-Journal

Gun control was the topic of discussion at a Monday evening forum.

The panel was in recognition of First Monday, a national event that is being used to debate the topic of gun control, according to Washburn law professor William Rich.

The evening wasn' t about deciding if gun control was needed, but to explore both sides of the issue. Rich said he felt the event went well and was informative.

" No one seemed to have anger, and I think people asked some good, rational questions," he said. " It was a good exchange on both sides."

About 20 people attended the panel discussion at the Bradbury Thompson Center on the Washburn University campus. The panel included Randy Hendershot, with the U.S. attorney' s office; Kelly Johnston, with Safe State Kansas; Bill Lucero, with the Topeka Juvenile Correction Facility; and Jason Coody, second-year Washburn law student.

The questions throughout the forum ranged from comparing gun violence in the United States with other First-World nations, such as England or Belgium, to how far gun control should really go.

During the discussion an audience member asked about the lines that should be drawn in terms of gun control and if enough legislation about gun control been passed.

Hendershot said that plenty of laws have been passed and the federal-level people are being prosecuted for breaking these laws. He added that Kansas is trying to uphold the laws.

At another point Coody said that people talk about hand guns and how dangerous they are.

" But automobiles are every bit as dangerous as a firearm," he said. " It' s not an exact comparison, but just a point of information."

Later in the discussion, Lucero revisited Coody' s point.

" Automobiles are like rifles or shot guns," Johnston said. " They have a purpose. The only purpose of a hand gun is to kill people."

Johnston said that while he wasn' t out to ban hand guns, people needed to be educated in using them and keep them locked up to ensure that they don' t fall into the wrong hands.

Dana, ran into a staff member of KDWP this morning, the nominations do NOT have to be confirmed by the legislature, whomever she appoints is in. The person I talked to was very PC in as much as he didn' t want to give his true feelings on the appointments. All he would say was that he would remain optimistic until proven otherwise. I still cannot believe the Governor would want to gamble her political future this way.

Randy,

According to the PAC directors I have talked with ALL appointments have to be confirmed in the State Senate. Federal rule. Usually a formality, the conformation process is necessary in instances like these. When Finney appointed that idiot a few years ago to Sec. W&P who hunted a little, and there was a groundswell about having qualifications, I believe led by the KBA.

I don' t know who you talked with nor will I question the character, but I deal with government employees ALL the time over more serious issues than this one. I take nothing that is said verbally to me as gospel, I require, and rarely receive documentation and policy procedures. As for KDWP employees being involved in the process, they should recuse themselves from comment and opinion, even though in this case it would help my cause, they could get into a peck of trouble in doing so. These appointments have as much impact on EMPLOYEES of KDWP than there will be on hunters. I would not want to be an employee of that agency in the near future. Toes are about to be stepped on. This " being optimistic until proven otherwise" is just about what I expected. No one wants to make any waves, because they will be the first on the chopping block. I would clearly state that is an example of a bureaucrat in self-preservation mode. Anyone with that opinion in my view is part of the problem. These appointments are clearly wrong and are justified in receiving NO BENEFIT of the DOUBT. What about their qualifications? What are they? What is the justification that these 3 are positive additions? What issues are to be addressed justifying this group of appointees? What is their agenda?

You are correct Gov. Kathleen, has committed political suicide with these appointments. According to the PACs I have talked with, the hunting public angered about the proposed Jennison appointment and those conservatives who wanted Gov' t Agency reform were the swing votes in this election. She has now abandonded that group. She will not be elected to another term. The good news if there is some is the base of affected public will be energised, and is happening while we speak. I do believe a long asleep 800# gorillia is waking and will be VERY out of sorts. With political pressure applied I believe ALL Gov. appointments could be held up. At the very least the appointees could be " encouraged" to resign. This battle will NOT be fought in the Public meetings. It will appear very stealthy. And I M just hoping here, but a recall of the Gov. is what I support and I believe is a necessity at this juncture. Her actions clearly indicate deception and lack of concern about the wishes of the majority of Kansans. Her record is very poor and out of step with said majority.

If enough polityical pressure is to be developed, actions will drive it. I have had editorials in the WE and LJ World. I have called, committed money, and time to this issue. There is no upside or defense of these appointees, period. That is why it must be fought.
