RE: Questions about the Rut
Fact is a whitetail rutting buck can travel up to 5 square miles during the rut, leaving their home core range.
After killing a rut crazed buck, you can definitely tell signs of him rutting by stained tarsal glands and the odor.
There are 3 primary phases during the rut- Seek, Chase, & Breed. A doe will continue to run from a buck as she is not ready to be bred, once she hits her estrous she will stand and allow the buck to breed her. A buck will continue to seek out and breed as many does as he can during the rut. All this energy they create while rutting will cause them to loose alot of body fat that they will begin to replenish in late season after Rut.
A year old doe is capable of maternity, however the odds of her getting pregnant are much less likely as an older mature doe.
