Questions about the Rut

Im doing an 8 pageresearch paper in English Compositionover the rut. In it will include how to hunt during the rut and how deer behavior is different than the rest of the year. Any thoughts or information you would like to share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

RE: Questions about the Rut

The intensity of the rut will greatly depend on the buck-to-doe ratio in your area.
I grew up in southeast Tennessee, and after moving to Southern Illinois I have noticed a big difference in the rut intensity. Back home, the does greatly out number the bucks, so you really dont see them too much, andit really isnt that big of a deal. Here in Il,when it kicks in, you know it is on.

The peak usually hitsaround the second week of November for us. I know it is sooner the farther North you go, and later in the South. I believe some parts of southern Texas is as late as January/February.

Man, I cant wait till October!!

RE: Questions about the Rut

A rule of thumb that I discovered back in the '60's is the peak of the rut seems to coincide with the 2nd new moon after the fall solistice, at least for the 'dacks. It also seems that this time of year a big buck is more apt, IMHO, to rely on two of his senses simultaneously { excluding smell } to bolt from danger, rather than just sight OR sound.

As I state, strictly my opinion.

another thing is that there is about 3 rutting periods....(the doe will go out if it has not been bread with, and then come back in)

dont forget to talk about the key thing for the rut, does, without them, bucks would be chasing nothing. Also remember how aggressive bucks are during the rut.

RE: Questions about the Rut

Consider the forum to be background reading, not source material for your paper. No self-respecting English teacher/professor would ever consider a posting on a web board to be a reliable source of information for a composition. An article from Huntingnet.com or another website perhaps, but not a web post. You should confirm that a web article is ok before you turn the paper in.

Call your local game office and set up an interview with a wildlife specialist or game warden. That would be impressive to an instructor.
