A lot of folks hunt with an '06. I've been using 150 gr. bullets. I used to use 180's but the 150's shoot flatter, don't kick as much and the deer drop just as quick. Just like with any rifle, if I shoot them through the lungs they'll run 30 - 50 yd. and drop. A variable scope of 2x -7x or 1.5x - 6x would be perfect in my opinion.

Wingbone hit the basics pretty good. Shot placement is everything. I like the 165 grain bullet but I would strongly suggest you test the weapon with several different loads and brands of ammo to find out what shoots the best..That includes what you can handle shooting since a heavier bullet will usually exert more force on your shoulder.

For deer you can't beat the 150 grain bullet. There is no better deer rifle than the 30-06. Its taken every game animal on earth.

I use a Remington 700 ADL .30-06 with 150 gr. Core-Lokt pointed softpoints. Amen to the 150 gr. loads being the best deer round.

You will want to try different brands of ammo as well as different bullet weights to see what shoots best out of your rifle.

I have owned a rifle that would only shot a 100 grain round well and then other rifles that would shoot just about anything from it well.

Each rifle will have it's own preference. The fun part comes in trying to figure out which bullet your rifle likes/shoots the best.

As to a scope, I would go with a 4X, 6X, 2X7 vaiable, or a 3x9 variable scope.

Regards,
Matt

30-06 is a great all around rifle. I used to shoot the 180s this year dropped to 165s (which shot better) and plan on coming down to the 150 grain round next trip to the range. Gotta fiddle with each individual rifle to see what it likes. Gary

buckmastr229,

Every post to your question is on the money. I switched from the 150 gr bullet to the 125 gr for whitetail in my 30-06. For mule deer last year I loaded 165 gr bullets.

Not trying to be a know it all but, I believe what you have is either the older model 742 or the newer version 7400 (I think that's the current Model #).

The 30-06 will do anything you'll ever want.
