Somebody is just playing around with you. Anything is possible, but I doubt it's real. Are there any tracks in it or branches broke? How about antler marks or is it stick marks?

Its a community scrape if its that bigand was most likely from earlier this year however the rut is over for the most part but there is still prolly a doe or two in the area that may come in late or is in heat now and a couple bucks may have refreshed it a lil. If its being used hunt it cuz you know you got a late doe in the area somewhere. I've seen scrapes 6-8 feet wide before and multiple ones that size around trees. A 4 footer is a pretty common size for a community scrape..... Otherwise your getting pranked.WCL

a 4foot scrape is a small one when the rut strats to kick in. i've seen them big enough to park 2 atv's in in my area. hunt that area ,there will likely be plenty of traffic there. i'd freshen that scrape with some buck lure and kick leaves in it to see if they open it back up. you may just pi$$ off mister big and kill him.

back in early bow season i watched a 8pt make a 2ft scrape near my stand. in muzzleloader season i checked the scrape ,he had opened it up to about 5-6ft wide. later that evening i killed that buck standing in that scrape with a doe.
