Need some advice
Here in NY, they finally lowered the age to hunt to 14 (no rifle in Chautauqua Co.) My son has a Mossberg 500 with a scope but I just found out that there is no rifled choke available for that gun.
I know this may seem like a stupid question, but can my son shoot rifled slugs out of it? What would happen? The choke kit that came with the gun has a mod,imp and full choke. Or am I stuck with getting another barrell? We hunt in mostly hardwoods so we're not shooting over say 50 yds...
As always, thanks for your help and advice

I killed my very first deer over 25 years ago with a Mossberg 500 with imp barrell and rifled slugs. I would suggest keeping to 50 yards and under, after 50 yards it is pretty much a hope and a prayer. Good luck!

Yes you can shoot rifled slugs, that's what they are designed for. However don't upgrade to sabot, those are designed for a rifled barrel.
You could also get a rifled barrel for the gun, my son has a Mossberg Bantam which is the 500 but youth model, with a rifled barrel, that thing stacks slugs at 50 yards.

Try OO Buckshot, and pattern it with all three chokes.
Make sure to clean thechokes with a good gun cleaner, before shooting them.
With some light oil on the threads, wiped off.
With OO buckshot you have between 12 and 15 - 30 caliber pellets, depending on shell length.
I shot a 8 pointer at 45 yards with OO Buckshot, It dropped on the spot.
It had the Mod choke in it.
I think OO Buckshot is better up close.
Good Luck

don't use buckshot , not legal here in NY but stick to the imp cyl choke and shoot a couple to see how well they do
My son uses the same set up only no scope and @50 yards he can get groups touching with remington slugs
