Default A .270 Sucks????

I've been shopping around for a new rifle lately, finally picked out one, a Remington Model 700 CDL. I've been hunting with a .243 for ten years and I love that caliber, but I figured theres no sense in buying the same caliber so I was looking at a .270 instead. Well, whenever I told the guy at my local gun store to order me a .270, he goes into a rant about how that caliber is horrible and that it has the highest percentage of lost deer of any centerfire caliber. Surely this isn't true? I know quite a few people who hunt with a.270 and I've never heard about that.

no, it's not true. It's great for deer. If he said that maybe he lost a deer, or several, with a .270

No offence to the guy who gave you the info but for a gun dealer I would say it is a pretty dumb response. Though the .270 is not my #1 deer rifle I do own one and have harvested a number if deer with it without any difficulties. I think the saying "It not the gun but the gunner" is my opinion on why deer are lost after being shot.

well that statement could actually be true considering that it is most likely the most popular caliber out there today .... but I would be curious where he got his data?

My father in law has shot over 50 deer with his 270 and dropped them on the spot with one shot, some over 100 yards. Id take my business elswhere, no gun smith should ever say whats good or bad unless you ask for his personal opinion, he should order adn sell what you requested. The guy more than likely doesnt knwo crap about hunting or guns. Hes an idiot.

If that were my gunshop, that employee would be fired. The 270 is an excellent deer caliber. Like others said...lost game is a shooter problem, not a gun problem. You cannot go wrong with a 270. There are other excellent calibers too.

You want a good debate bring this up in hunting camp.

I personally am not a 270 fan. I have owned a few of them over the years. All of them would get hot after 4 rounds and stay that way. I believe there is better deer calibers out there like the 308 and 30.06. I own a 25.06 that will do everything plusand kill them just as dead as a 270.

Sadly the vast majority of people who own or work at gun or sporting goods stores these days don't know much more than the general public about the things they sell. And like the general public they are prone to wildly varying and oftenbadly flawedopinions about things.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 270 as a deer rifle. Probably one of the two most popular calibers for whitetails in America. The other beingthe 30-06. If you do your job properly a deer will never fail to die because you were shooting a 270. I'd take my business elsewhere.

I love a 7mm-08 ...it brought down this 300lb+ whitetail ...you can see the rifle was a TC Encore
