Best Method for sighting in rifle??
I have a CVA Optima Elite with a .50 muzzle loader bbl, and a bbl in .270 win.
I purchased scopes and mounted both of them, Whats the bestway to get them sighted in??
Should I take it to a shop and have it bore sighted?
What distance should they be boresighted at??
My hunting would likely be shots under a 100yds.__________________

I boresight the rifles first, then fire a three shot pattern at the targetfrom 100 yards cleaning the barrel between every shot. From there adjust your sights to the center of the group. Repeat, and do some fine tuning.

everyone has their own way of sighting in, i normally dont boresight, when i sight mine in, i always sight them in about 2 inches high at a 100 yards. it want cause a miss at short range, but you want have to hold high at longer ranges. i have a cva .50 cal muzzleloader and mine is sighted in 2.5 inches high at 100 yards using 250gr power belts with 110 gr of pryodex p powder. shoots really well out to about 200yards

I shoot a couple of times at about 25 yards with a solid rest (lead sled) till I'm real close, just a bit high, and then set the rifle for an inch high at 100 yards.

I would definitely boresight the scope first. It will at least get you on paper and then you can make the fine tune adjustments after that. The less shooting you do, the less it costs you in shells.

Laser Bore sighter is worth it's weight in gold. A guy had one where we were hunting in WI afew years back that saved our trip. My buddy missed a deer opening morning, didn't have the opportunity to fire some shots to see if it was the scope. A guy at our lodge offered us that laser bore sighter and we saw that his gun was about 14 inches off at 50 yards! Zero'd it in with the laser and next day it was dead on at 100 yards! He killed a deer later that night! I'd buy one of those, zero it in the way they tell you then hit the range and see how it shoots. It will save you the money in ammo and time you would have had to spend figuring out your patterns. Don't use this as a substitute for practice, but it is a good way to get your rifle on target.

I use the Shoot N-C targets that have the inch by inch marks. Shoot at a 100 yards and the target shows how much adjustment you need . Usually can get on in 3 or 4 shots.
