Robert his is amazing that you kill a lot of deer, but you could not catch any deer. I think, to catch a deer is a tough task than kill a deer. You have to spend a little energy for it.

These threads always crack me up.They come up quite often and the responses are quite comical.I don't use the word harvest, because it just doesn't sound right to me.I say shot or took or killed depending upon who I am having the discussion with.I have no problem with someone using the word harvest.I am quite sure I know what they did.
The thing that makes me laugh are the guy's who some how think that if you don't say kill your a whimp, like somehow saying kill elevates their man status. What a freakin joke! Living your life with honor and integrity makes you a man, loving and supporting your family to the best of your abilities makes you a man.Using the word kill in a conversation with a person who you know it will offend makes you a moron.Yeah let's force our beliefs down someone's throat and really show them what fine people we hunters are!

There's no need to force any beliefs down anyones throat tsoc.

Political correctness has justtaken many away from the realities of life. I feel if you can eat a steak, burger, porkchop, or a venison tenderloin......you damn better well know somthing was killed so you could live. If you are a meat eater that's the reality. Too many times I've heard someone say "I really love steak or meat, but I can't really think about where it came from, or how it was killed." These people are detached from reality. So now to appease them(anti hunters and the squeemish), some say "harvest" so maybe the thought of actually killing somthing for food is bypassed and maybe.......just maybe the sqeemish actually think we gathered it. Well I don't know about anyone else, but this burns me up a bit.

We as humans are meat eaters and hardwired to hunt and kill. I don't feel there is a need to soften the blow to some who are squeemish of the word. It is a simple reality. Nothing stands better than the truth. If you'renot a hunter, fine. If you'renot a meat eater, fine......but that still doesn't take away from the reality of what we do(hunters).

I would love to see what the vegans and vegetarians would do if there was a real crisis in our world, and there were no supermarkets to buy tofu and soyburgers.Well, either die..... orset out and kill some food. That ancient hardwiring would immediately kick in. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that would be "supporting your family to the best of your abilities". ....pretty admirable in my book.

Using the word kill in a conversation with a person who you know it will offend makes you a moron.
This comment disturbes me a bit as well, simply because...........why should it? ...and how doyouknow it will offend? You are simply being truthful as a hunter, and describing a reality.

In my eyes, one who gets offended by this reality of life is a moran.

pigiron, you have expressed yourself very well and I understand where your coming from.As with all things there are certain distinctions to be made.I am just going to err on the side of consideration whether I am dealing with a non hunter or as much as it may pain me with the anti hunter. With the anti hunter I don't want to give them "any" ammunition to have some thing reflect negatively upon us as hunters,I want them to look like the extremeist's and idiot's they are.If you are respectful and cool as a cucumber and they are out of control and acting poorly, how do you think that looks to the non hunters who havn't made up their mind as to which side of the fence to be on? I want us to be the good guys and gals, the one's who are respectful and considerate and well spoken.
I say with honesty if someone feels they have to say kill in the presence of a non hunter they are doing hunters more harm then good. The bottom line is that you have to know your audience.
It is no different than sitting with a surgeon as they talk about the surgery that your wife or child needs and having them say we are going to slice or gash them open and rip out their gall bladder and fill them with toxic drugs and thread them up.We all know what the surgeon is going to do,you just don't want to hear it that way.
Someone can be a person who is not opposed to hunting but be an animal lover, they may not like to hear the word kill as it relates to taking an animals life,it may be offensive to them.
Why wouldn't we tailor our language to be respectful of someones feelings or upbringing? You of course can do any thing you wish.I am going to be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Hmmmm. Never heard of somebody "killing" corn, wheat, alphafa, hay, or grapes. Not yet anyway . Never heard of somebody harvesting fish. How'd this "harvest" term ever get into the picture of killing deer?

Harvest is fine, kill is ok, took, shot, ...all ok.
It's not the word that's used, but the context and the way in which it is said.

If someone is celebrating a great shot, then no problem.
However if someone is celebrating the actual death or dying, or the way the front shoulder was blasted open, then I do have a problem with that. It's just immaturity.
If the non-hunting public and/or anti's want to portray hunters as bloodthirsty and wonton killers, thenthrowing such portrayals back in their face with a "yeah, so what" attitude is going out of your way to invite their attacks. They're not worth your time.

Just ignore them, and eat your legally gained meat, and be respectful of the animals. That's all there is to it in my opinion.

I KILL mice, bugs, etc.

I HARVEST whatever I put time in and hunt.

Then I use the term harvest, I intend for it to looked at wholelistically (sp?). I harvest the sights and sounds of nature, and taking the wild animal. You can bet your left nut that I kill my game, but to me the word kill seems more that the only way I am happy is to "kill". I disagree with this thinking.

I agree with this comment partially. There is no need to bring attention to gore. The cleanest of shots is a beautiful thing. To celebrate anything different would bebarbaric.

I love nothing more than celebrating a clean kill.
