RE: who all has taken there hunter education course
ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog ORIGINAL: huntnm That was the one thing that disappointed me with the course....they talked about all of the weapons, but we didnt get to shoot bows or muzzleloaders and when we shot the other guns, they acted like we knew how they worked |

RE: who all has tooken there hunter education course
I took my first one in 1956. Since then I've taken it again. Taken the Bowhunter Ed course and have was an instructor for both courses for a number of years. I think I have about 15 with the bowhunter classes. I had my Maryland Certification in both and was going to teach them here in NY. The local rod and gun club needed a bowhunting instructor. BUT Alas, NY state says I have to start from ground zero and take the course again and instructor courses again and blah blah blah. Hell, I'm 64 years old. Student of the classes I taught could use their card in all the free world and Canada, including NY. I have a current in good standing instructor card from Maryland. Remember, NY accepts students from my classes in Maryland.... but... they won't accept the instructor. The class was given just before I called to check at the suggestion of the local Rod And Gun Club. Next class about the time bow season is in. I'm 64 and not going to waste a hunting season going to classes to teach what I can teach blind folded. Besides that, they don't have all the fancy toys Maryland has. Anyway, the club said... screw 'em, you can help without being an instructor. You know how that would go. I'd teach all the bow stuff and someone else gets a feather. I've decided .... screw it, I'm going hunting or golfing or swimming. I'm 64 and don't want to waste time. LOL

RE: who all has tooken there hunter education course
I've taken it in NJ, MD and WV and am now an Instructor in WV. We don't teach it like they did 50 years ago. We teach it based on practical skills and safety with a lot of common sense thrown in, that for some reason even the most normal of people seem to loose when they see a flash of antler. We also ask for anyone in the class to pass along anything they feel might help keep someone from getting hurt. Every singel year a hunter dies from falling out of a treestand or wearing their harness wrong and hanging themselves and I will bet that every single one of them has said " That won't happen to me"
I have not only learned quite a bit at each class, I have also met a lot of great folks, got to hear a lot of great huntin' stories and even picked up a couple new places to hunt. The old adage, you are never to old to learn something new. Oh and one other thing you might want to think about. If you ever try to win those contests for a hunt somewhere and by chance actually do, many states require non-residents to have taken the course regardless of age, so it doesn't hurt to take now when you have time and then be trying to scramble to get one if you get a chance to hunt somewhere else. OK I will get off my horse now, sorry just think it is important to think about. |
